From his childhood in Clifton Rd, Takapuna, Tim attended Takapuna Grammar - showing great promise on the academic side. Sports? Not so much.
Except for sailing, which became a life-long passion. But before that he had a stint with his parents, Syd and Joyce, in Canberra. Sydney Johnston was High Commissioner for NZ in Australia, where Dad got to attend his first two years at Canberra University (studying Economics and Politics) - and drive his Dad around in the diplomatic Rambler Nash.
Alas, Syd died at his desk in Canberra leaving Joyce, Dad, at 17, and his siblings Suzanne, Ewen, Paul and Julie.
Returning to NZ, Tim met the love of his life, Jan, on a blind date (thanks Dewey). They've been inseparable ever since - with sailing adventures throughout the Pacific, business ventures of many kinds, and a roll-call of friends in their variety of ports-of-call; Devonport, Russell, Herne Bay, Cheltenham, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Wanaka, Greenhithe and Tamahere.
Dad was a deep thinker, a kind man, a wise CEO, pilot, sailor, and friend to us all. Plus a great Dad to Jeremy and Poppa Tim to Ruby, Lily, Charlie and Harry. Plus a loving Uncle to Debs and Ros. We'll miss him hugely, but are thankful for the amazing life he lead and the brave and dignified way he chose to farewell us, in his own way.
Please join us on Sunday February 2nd, when hopefully the sun is shining on the beach he loved most - and we all have had a little time to decompress and breath, and prepare a fitting celebration for such a kind and admirable man.
See you then.
