Guest Speaker:
Derek Duval
is a registered professional engineer (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering and Fire/Life Safety Code Consulting Expert located in the Southern California Region. He works hard to ensure that his client's needs (internal and external) are met and that, most of all, the life safety goals are met for the people and property he is hired to protect.

Realizing a need for expanding fire safety education, Mr. Duval is working with UCSD Extended Studies to provide course work in Fire Protection Engineering intended to bridge the gap between traditional engineering disciplines and into fire protection engineering.

With extensive working knowledge of the building/fire codes and standards, specifically the California Building Code (CBC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Mr. Duval provides fire protection and life safety solutions to a variety of clients.

Mr. Duval has managed projects in multiple vertical markets with a specialized focus in health care, industrial/manufacturing processes involving hazardous materials (combustible dusts, flammable and combustible liquids), detention and justice, DoD facilities, mixed-use development, higher education, and storage and warehouse facilities.

Attendees will learn the following:
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of NFPA 101, covering its purpose, scope, and key requirements applicable to various occupancy types.
  • Explain the process of achieving compliance with NFPA 101 standards, including identifying applicable codes, conducting evaluations, and implementing necessary corrective actions.
  • Share case studies illustrating successful NFPA 101 compliance strategies, highlighting best practices and lessons learned from real-world projects.
  • Discuss techniques for conducting fire risk assessments in buildings, identifying potential hazards, and implementing mitigation measures to enhance fire safety.
  • Explore the integration of NFPA 101 requirements with AIA guidelines and standards, emphasizing the importance of aligning design and construction practices with fire safety regulations.
