Emory Global Health Institute
gLOBAL hEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM
General Information

The Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI) is committed to advancing health equity through its various programs. The Global Health Scholars Program (formerly Field Scholars Award Program), EGHI's flagship student initiative, has empowered over 400 students since its inception in 2008, enabling impactful research endeavors spanning 57 countries. EGHI champions projects that cater to underserved populations both globally and domestically. This year, our enhanced cohort model provides additional mentorship and support throughout each scholar's summer research endeavor, fostering a more personalized and immersive learning journey.

Annually, EGHI funds multidisciplinary student teams to engage in global health projects, collaborating closely with an Emory faculty member and in-country partner organization. Our funding initiatives are designed to address the unique needs of marginalized communities, thereby advancing health equity on a global scale. While many of our funded projects are situated in low-or middle-income countries, EGHI also welcomes project proposals aimed at addressing health disparities and promoting health, safety, and security within communities across the United States.

Project Ideas

• Project ideas will be released after the announcement of the Global Health Scholars selection.

Team Formation

• EGHI will match Emory faculty with students to compose the multidisciplinary teams.

Team Composition

• Multidisciplinary Global Health Scholar teams include 2-3 students and must include students from at least two different Emory schools or disciplines.
• A student who is enrolled in a joint degree program can represent both of the schools in which he/she/they are enrolled.
• Teams may also include a student from a university located in the low- or middle-income country in which the project is based, and that student's field of study/discipline can also count toward the team's multi-discipline/school requirement.
• Teams can include a medical resident or post-doctoral fellow, whose field of expertise can also count toward the three discipline/school requirement.
• Students from other US-based universities may be members of a team, but EGHI will not provide scholarship funding to those students.

Pre-Project Requirements

• EGHI Global Health Scholars must take an online pre-departure course, and a pre-project course that will include: discussions on health, security, safety requirements if international travel is allowed, cultural sensitivity, and principles of equitable partnerships in global health work.
• The online courses will be available via Emory Canvas during the spring semester.

Reporting Requirements

• Scholars are required to submit two Reflection Posts per month.
• Monthly, EGHI hosts Scholars Team Touchpoints
• Upon completing their projects, Global Health Scholars teams present their findings and experiences at EGHI's annual INFOCUS event held during the fall semester.
