Smithfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated was chartered on March 26, 1966, in Smithfield, North Carolina. The chapter has been a staple in the community for 59 years, focusing on areas of education, mentorship, and scholarship. Our fraternity’s signature events include Guide Right, which focuses on mentorship, the Kappa Foundation to support scholarships, and our community service initiative, Healthy Kappas Healthy Communities, to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles. For Everyone's Health and Safety
It takes the compassion, care, and personal responsibility of everyone to help assure a safe experience.
All riders are required to wear a helmet (they reduce the risk of head injuries by 85%)
- The courses use rural and semi-rural roads typical for this region of North Carolina, and most pavement is pristine; however, there are short sections that are slightly bumpy, and the shoulders in some sections can be narrow, so share the road, stay right, and ride single file (you may ride up to two-abreast when traffic allows)
- The routes and timing of the event are chosen to minimize cyclist interaction with regular traffic; however, you will encounter motor vehicles during the ride. All North Carolina traffic laws as they apply to bicycles must be obeyed.
- Minimum age for participating cyclists is 12. Riders age 16 and under must ride with a parent.
Road Cycling Safety
Signals: Use hand signals when turning, changing lanes or slowing/stopping as follows:

To help you ride safely and have fun (because there’s nothing like crossing the finish line and celebrating with your friends and family after a long day in the saddle) please remember these 10 cycling safety tips provided by PaulaSmithFitness:
- Proper Attire: Wear a helmet to reduce the risk of head injuries, padded bike shorts for comfort, a cycle jersey or sweat wicking shirt, and cycling shoes or sneakers (no open toed shoes)
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and/or electrolyte drinks, avoid soft drinks or drinks with lots of sugar
- Fuel: Eat nutritious snacks but avoid nuts and other high protein snacks
- Equipment: Check tire pressure, seat height, brakes, and lights before you head out
- Share the road: Stay to the right and ride single file (you may ride up to two-abreast when traffic allows)
- Be Verbal: Stay in constant communication with others around you:
- When passing another cyclist, pass only on the left and announce, “on your left”
- When riding in a group and there is a slower cyclist or runner ahead announce “biker up” or “runner up” to alert cyclists behind you
- When riding in a group and there is a road hazard (roadkill, potholes, gravel, etc.) announce "pothole" or "gravel" and point to it to alert cyclists behind you
- When a riding in a group and there is a faster car or cyclist coming up from behind announce "car back" or “biker back” to alert cyclists ahead of you
- Unplug: Ditch the headphones, listening to music can impair your ability to hear warnings and/or traffic
- Stretch: Stretch your quads, hamstrings, calves, and lower back before and after your ride and at rest stops
- Always ride with a smile: It makes cycling way more fun!
