Street Drugs and How they Change Your Mind EMS providers treating patients using various street drugs today is different from treating patients using illicit drugs from the 80’s and 90’s. Illicit drug use has become more mainstream among many individuals from various demographics and without any regard to an individual’s socioeconomic status. Through curiosity or peer pressure, many people tried a substance they believed harmless. However, repeated usage of their various substances for fun changed their brain into an addiction that challenged their self-control to diminish the use, which now interferes with their ability to resist their new intense urge to use again.

EMS providers must recognize how drug usage is a chronic drug-seeking disease that has become so compulsive individuals find it challenging to control regardless of its harmful consequences, resulting in relapsing or leading to their demise. Individuals in recovery are challenged daily to resist the urge of illicit drug use, and there is a forever increased risk for any individual to relapse years after not taking any drugs.

The last decade has fostered increased awareness that tactical athletes benefit from injury prevention strategies that are traditionally used by athletes in the sports setting. Unlike traditional athletes, there is no “off season” for tactical athletes...in other words, tactical athletes are always operating “in-season.” The purpose of this lecture is to promote awareness of injury prevention that can set you up for success for an “in-season” career.
