Join us on October 30
We take great honour in inviting you to an A.C Jordan Day event at the University of Cape Town. The African Languages Department and the A.C Jordan Chair in African Studies, at the Center for African Studies at the University of Cape Town, will co-host an inaugural A.C Jordan Day on the 30th of October 2023. The event will honor the life, intellectual contribution, and influence of Professor Archibald Campbell Jordan, famously known for his novel, Ingqumbo yeminyanya (The Wrath of the Ancestors). The day will become an annual collaborative event that will provide a platform for critical reflections and engaging dialogues that will center African intellectual histories, scholars, and scholarship across the continent, in the ongoing process of decolonizing the university. Moreover, in 2023, the event marks a significant milestone - 200 years since isiXhosa was converted into an alphabet in the Tyhume banks, which later sparked many vibrant debates in the early newspapers by African intellectuals on various issues, including political authority, justice, the translation of the Bible, and issues related to orthography.
The A C Jordan Day incorporates students and staff and will feature a keynote address, an academic panel, textual readings, and musical performances. We are delighted that this year’s keynote address will be given by renowned author and educationist, Dr. Sindiwe Magona, author, poet, playwright, essayist, storyteller, actor, and inspirational speaker retired from the United Nations at Head Quarters, New York, after a service of more than two decades, and relocated to her home country, South Africa. Magona writes in both English and isiXhosa and translates for various media, including film. She also voices books for the audio market.
The keynote address will be followed by a panel discussion on the legacy and future directions of research inspired by A C Jordan. The panelists include Prof. Pamela Maseko, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Nelson Mandela University, Prof. Suren Pillay, the A C Jordan Chair of African Studies at UCT, and Mr. Sanele Ntshingana of the Department of African Languages at Literatures at UCT.
