Ethical Challenges in Case Management
Join us on Friday, March 20, 2026
Earn 3 continuing education credits in ethics during our in-person March Conference in the beautiful Carnegie at Washingtonian Center! In addition to our 3 informative sessions, we will have local vendors on site for networking opportunities.
Session 1: Case Management with Neurodiverse Populations: Ethical and Cultural Considerations: Explores the concept of neurodiversity and normalize the lived experience of neurodivergence. In response to the common needs of neuro-minorities, this presentation will introduce ethical considerations that support the creation of neuro-affirming practices for helping professionals.
Session 2: Guardianship & Surrogates: Navigating the Ethics of Deciding for Others: Discussion on when patients lose the capacity to make their own medical decisions, and the responsibility shifts to a surrogate. This transition often triggers moral distress for both families and clinical teams. Explore the "Hierarchy of Decision-Making"—the ethical gold standard for surrogate action. We will explore how to evaluate a surrogate and strategies for resolving conflicts, including a roadmap for when and how to petition for guardianship as a last resort.
Session 3: The Ethics of Advanced Directives for Persons Living with HIV/AIDS: Advance directives play a critical role in ensuring that individuals receive timely, appropriate, and personally desired health care. In persons living with HIV/AIDS it is important to communicate treatment preferences and designation of authorized decision makers to streamline care delivery, reduce uncertainty and promote autonomy during periods of diminished capacity.
