Associate Professor Rebecca Dunlop
Originally from Ireland, Rebecca Dunlop completed her BSc (Honours) degree in Environmental Biology followed by her PhD in fish neuroethology, both from The Queen’s University of Belfast. She migrated Australia in 2004 to undertake a post-doc in humpback whale social communication at UQ where the research resulted in a number of highly cited papers, solidifying her international reputation as a leader and expert in large whale communication and social behaviour. She then began lecturing in the School of Veterinary Science in 2010, mainly in animal physiology and moved to the School of Biological Sciences in 2021 to take up a lecturing position in animal behaviour and physiology.

Rebecca's research interests are in animal physiology, behaviour, and communication. She mainly works on humpback whales, and has worked on bottlenose dolphins, beaked whales, pilot whales, and false killer whales. Her lab focuses on four main research areas: cetacean acoustic communication, hearing, and behaviour; the effects of noise on humpback communication, behaviour, and physiology; humpback whale social behaviour; and endocrine physiology in cetaceans.

Plenary talk title: “Hearing Tests in Baleen Whales”
Professor Timothy Van Renterghem
Timothy Van Renterghem (born in Bruges, Belgium, 1976) received his degree in Bio-engineering (Environmental Technologies) at Ghent University, Faculty of Bio-engineering Sciences, in 1999. In October 2003, he obtained his Phd at Ghent University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Information Technology, Research group WAVES. Timothy is currently Full Professor in Environmental Acoustics, and teaches courses related to wave physics, noise pollution, acoustical instrumentation and urban (sound) planning. He has been a visiting Professor at the Lab of Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University (UK).

Timothy Van Renterghem is member of the Belgian Acoustical Society (ABAV), the European Acoustical Association (EAA), and the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). He is Associate-Editor of Acta Acustica united with Acustica (journal of the EAA) for the theme “Atmospheric Sound” and Elsevier’s “Urban Forestry and Urban Greening”. He is currently author of about 90 A1-publications and more than 140 publications in the proceedings of international congresses. Timothy Van Renterghem co-authored the book “Predicting Outdoor Sound” (Taylor and Francis, CRC press, 690 pages, ISBN 9781498740074), a reference work in this scientific field.

His main research interest is sound propagation outdoors, strongly linked to the environmental noise issue. Subtopics of interest are the impact of local meteorology on sound propagation in the atmospheric boundary layer, the interaction between vegetation and acoustic waves and urban sound propagation and design. A specific measure of continuing interest is how vegetation can be used to tackle environmental noise issues, both from the physical point of view (decibel reduction) and perception improvement (including audio-visual interactions and soundscaping with natural sounds).

Plenary talk title: “Audio-Visual Interactions in Environmental Noise Perception and the Link to Urban Greening”
Dr Usama Kadri
Dr Kadri is an applied mathematician and engineer at Cardiff University in the UK. His research focus lies in the area of fluid dynamics and nonlinear phenomena. Specifically, it is concerned with studying “acoustic–gravity waves” - an emerging field that is rapidly gaining popularity among the scientific community, as it finds broad utility in mathematical physics, physical oceanography, quantum analogues, multiphase flows, wave power harnessing, and marine biology, addressing most challenging questions with high impact on science and society.

Plenary talk title: “Acoustic-Gravity Waves, Theory and Applications ”
Keynote Speakers
Irene van Kamp
Irene van Kamp (NL) was educated at the University of Groningen and the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and has a background in sociology , psychology and epidemiology.   Since 2000 she is working as a senior researcher and project manager at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (Netherlands), with an assignment in the field of urban environmental quality and quality of life, and specific expertise in the field of environmental noise. She was co-author in a  review on interventions in the framework of the WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines. She currently coordinates the Horzion2020 project on the Early Environmental quality and life-course mental health effects (Equal- Life). In 2012 she received  the Dutch Golden Decibel award for her scientific work in the noise domain. In 2021 she was awarded the ICBEN Award of Excellence in Research on the Biological Effects of Noise.

Professor Ben Cazzolato
Ben Cazzolato completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and PhD at the University of Adelaide. Upon graduation he undertook post-doctoral research at the Institute of Sound and Vibration at the University of Southampton (UK), having received an Anglo-Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Engineering. In 2000 he returned to Australia to commence employment as an academic at the University of Adelaide.
Ben has worked in the field of acoustics, vibrations, and system dynamics for three decades, as a consulting engineer, a researcher, and academic. He has published over 250 refereed conference and journal papers, and co-authored the text “Acoustic analyses using Matlab and Ansys”. His current research involves the conversion of wave energy to electricity, study of leak detection in water pipes, and mitigation of noise radiated from the exhaust stack of open-cycle gas turbine power stations, amongst others.

Keynote talk title: "Open-Cycle Gas Turbines: Predicting and Controlling Far-Field Noise"
Dr Erin C. Schafer
Dr Schafer has been a faculty member in the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at the University of North Texas since 2005.
