The Alabama Council of the ENA originated as the Metro Birmingham Emergency Department Nurses Association (EDNA), which was formed in the mid-late 1970's. Currently our state has over 400 members registered in our state council.
Here at ENA, our mission is to advocate for patient safety and excellence in emergency nursing practice. We envision our self to be the global emergency nursing resource and advocate for Safe Practice and Safe Care. Our values, derived from the vision of our co-founders Judith Kelleher and Anita Dorr, guide our priorities. We value:

Ascension St. Vincent's Birmingham was founded in 1898 by the Daughters of Charity as a ministry dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care designed to sustain and improve the health of the community as well as its citizens. The all-private room facility is a 409-bed, acute care hospital offering a spectrum of care ranging from a state-of-the-art robotics surgery program to the first Heart Valve Clinic in the state. The hospital specializes in medical services including oncology, cardiology, women’s and children’s services, orthopedics/sports medicine, neurology, community/corporate wellness services, and surgical services. Amanda Simmons

Amanda Simmons is an RN at an inpatient hospice facility in Auburn. She has 12 years of nursing experience, with a background in med/surg, oncology, and urology. She is an advocate for patient dignity and comfort at the end of life, and founded the first active nurse Honor Guard in the state of Alabama.
Shea A. Duerring

Dr. Duerring earned his bachelor’s degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed internship and residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at University of Alabama at Birmingham/Children’s of Alabama. Dr. Duerring is board certified in general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, and EMS medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, The American College of Emergency Physicians, and The Academy of Emergency Medical Services. Currently Dr. Duerring lives in Birmingham where he serves as an associate professor at UAB in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Department of Emergency Medicine. He also serves as the Assistant State EMS Medical Director for Pediatrics at the Alabama Office of EMS, the Principal Investigator and Medical Director for Alabama EMS for Children, Immediate Past President of the Alabama Chapter of the National Association of EMS Physicians, is a member of the Board of Directors for the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and serves as a member of the Alabama State EMS Medical Control Committee. He also currently serves as the medical director for Rocky Ridge Fire Department, Pelham Fire Department, Alabaster Fire Department, and North Shelby Fire District. In his various roles he has worked to advocate for pediatric patient care and pediatric disaster preparedness within the state of Alabama and has consistently represented pediatrics on a statewide, regional, and national level. Dr. Duerring has lectured regionally and nationally on prehospital care of pediatrics and pediatric disaster preparedness. He has worked previously with the Deep South Biosafety Worker Training Program and the National Association of EMS Physicians to provide pandemic and disaster education related to pediatrics. He is a contribution author to the NASEMSO National EMS Clinical Guidelines, is the prehospital medicine site leader for the Pediatric Pandemic Network  at Children’s of Alabama, and is the CBRNE Preparedness group leader for the Gulf 7 Pediatric Disaster Network.
Sandy Goode

Sandy Goode currently works as the Coordinator of the Expectant Parent Program at Huntsville Hospital. She has been in this leadership role for 16 years and has been with the Childbirth Education Program for 30 years total.  Her various roles have been teaching childbirth and parenting classes as well as touring expectant parents through the maternity unit.  She worked as a Medicaid Maternity Intake Care Coordinator for 9 years and now works for Huntsville Hospital Employee Health for the past 2 years along with her role at The Women’s Center. While her passion is in expectant parent and maternity care education, her newest interest is on a personal note.  She is working to bring awareness and education about upright head pain caused by a Spinal Cerebrospinal fluid leak. She has given several presentations on the subject of (SIH) Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension and Spinal CSF leaks. Her hope is to bring awareness about upright head pain caused by Spinal CSF leaks and diagnostic and treatment options and also how to be connected to doctors who specialize in this diagnosis and treatment.

Peter Yen is a dynamic speaker and process champion with 23 years of trauma/burn provider/leadership experience in large private and academic healthcare systems. Providing Burn trauma related lectures to hospitals, clinics, universities, firefighters, EMS, nursing, allied health, medical providers, and coding/billing staff. His formal training includes Doctor of Medical Science, Master of Healthcare Administration, Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma, board certified Physician Assistant, and FEMA disaster management certifications. He serves as Vice President of Service Development, supporting all Burn Reconstructive Centers of America/Joseph M. Still Burn Centers across the network
Adam Charles Wilson

Adam Wilson is an Assistant Nurse Manager at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Emergency Department. Adam is a two time graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with his BSN in 2018 and his Masters in Nursing Healthcare Administration in 2023. Prior to nursing Adam Served in the United States Marine Corps from 2010 to 2014 as an Amphibious Reconnaissance Marine. Adam is also married to Marie Wilson and they have three kids. His passions include traveling with his family and coaching his kids teams.
Kristin M. Rezek

Kristin Rezek received her B.S. in Allied Health and Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and after several years working as a Medical Technologist she felt a strong pull to work directly with patients.  She returned to college to receive her MSN from Boston College as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and thus began her career working in community-based settings in Massachusetts, California and Alabama providing OB/GYN services to women across the lifespan. Throughout her 10+ years working in healthcare she heard stories from women of all ages about their personal experience and struggles with domestic violence and sexual assault and began to feel a calling to help women and men who have suffered such abuse.  In 2017, Kristin began working with the Crisis Center serving victims of sexual assault.  She also played a role in helping get the Mobile Unit started to reach survivors in the surrounding rural communities.  As her love for this position began to grow, Kristin went from a contract nurse position, to a part-time position and is now the SANE Coordinator of the Crisis Center program. She recently became certified as a SANE-A through the IAFN and is the President of the IAFN Alabama Chapter. Kristin seeks to continue learning and increasing her knowledge partnering and networking with programs across the state to best help victims find the justice they are seeking.
Jillian Brodeur

Jillian is a FNP with 9 years of pediatric ER RN experience and 2 years of pediatric ER  NP experience.  She has  a passion for improving care for kids outside of a pediatric ER. With ten years of experience in emergency medicine,  she is  passionate about helping others be less afraid to care for kids because kids aren't just little adults.
Madison Finch

Madison Finch is a PhD student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. Her current research focuses on acute injury prevention and management with emphasis on pre-hospital bleeding control. She has clinical experience in emergency nursing at a major academic Level I trauma center, and currently works as a clinical research nurse for the Department of Surgery-Trauma Division at the same facility. She is a certified Stop the Bleed® Instructor and actively volunteers her time providing courses for community members.

Michael has been a paramedic for over 30 years, and an Emergency Department RN for over 30 years. He has held numerous Leadership Roles in the Emergency Department and currently works for Tenet Healthcare- Alabama Market with oversight for Risk Management as a Patient Safety Officer. He holds a Juris Doctorate of Law from Birmingham School of Law. In his spare time, Michael is a professional Santa.
Lina Evans
Shelby County Coroner's Office
Lina Evans is the current Coroner for Shelby County and the President of the AL Coroners Association. She has degrees in Biology/Chemistry, Nursing and Forensics and currently holds over 25 publications in scientific journals. She has been at UAB for the past 24 years in basic science and clinical research.  She has over 25 publications in scientific journals.  She was a RN at Children’s of AL for 13 years. She has been with Shelby County Coroner’s office for the past 15 years and has been the Coroner for the past 7 years. In her spare time, she takes call as a SANE for SafeShelby. She lives in Montevallo. She has 3 sheep and 1 goat  and a husband.
Aimee Rothe

Aimee has been in the field of nursing for 16 years; with 14 of those years in the fields of trauma, burns, and emergency nursing. She is currently the director of the bariatric surgery program at Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham. She is on the state board of the Alabama Emergency Nurses Association and serves as state president elect, and fundraising chair. Aimee is a BLS/ACLS/PALS/CPI/Stop the Bleed Instructor and serves as TNCC Course faculty for the state of Alabama. She is a 2007 Alumna of the UAB School of Nursing and a 2019 graduate of the University of South Alabama. She serves as a contract legal nurse consultant for several law firms on emergency and trauma cases. She is a NAPNAP Alliance for Human Trafficking subject matter presenter and has also served as a sexual assault nurse examiner for the Crisis Center in Birmingham Alabama.
Michael Callihan

Dr. Mike Callihan is an emergency nurse and nurse researcher with more than 20 years’ experience in emergency medical care, serving as a firefighter/ Paramedic for 23 years and an emergency nurse for 15. Dr. Callihan is one of the only nurses in the world trained in the collection and analysis of biomechanical data with a focus on musculoskeletal injury risk identification and correction in the workplace. The combination of his clinical expertise, research specialization, and over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry drives the application of his research to practice within the nursing profession. Dr. Callihan holds a PhD in Environmental and Occupational Health Nursing from the University of Kentucky, a Masters in the Science of Nursing Education from Gonzaga University, and an AD and BS in Nursing from Miami University of Ohio. Dr. Callihan is continuing his education while pursuing a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a focus on Industrial hygiene to further expand his understanding of occupational health and wellness concerns. 
Dr. Callihan currently serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a primary focus on pre-licensure education. His current research focuses on safer lifting strategies in the emergency department and for in-home caregivers.

Tammy Mathews

Tammy has been an ED Nurse since 1997 and has been very active with the Emergency Nurses Association and Alabama Emergency Nurses Association since 2001.  She is the current Alabama ENA Government Affairs Chair and has represented our state at both state and national Day on the Hill since 2009. She is a nurse advocate against violence in the emergency department and violence against emergency nurses since 2001 at a state and national level.  Her biggest platform is safety for Emergency Nurses and stopping violence in Emergency Departments, along with making violence against ED nurses a Federal crime and prosecuting perpetrators to the maximum level as a felony. She is vigilant about making the ED accessible to all who are in need, children being of utmost importance and  advocating for ED accessibility to veterans, along with advocating for appropriate access for psychiatric patients.

Nathan White

Nathan White is a clinical educator at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, AL with over 15 years of prehospital and nursing experience spanning from working camps in multiple states to being at bedside practicing trauma and emergency nursing, clinical education, and ground 911 paramedicine in Virginia. He has worked in emergency nursing since completing his nursing degree Southwest Virginia and has enjoyed providing emergency nursing in North Alabama since 2017, piloting with ENA a new emergency nurse residency program to support new nurses to emergency nursing. He enjoys educating in multiple disciplines of healthcare and continues teaching in several courses from CPR to advanced trauma classes and creating new education roll-out that present at a facility wide level. Nathan is an Army veteran completing 8 years of service, an Eagle Scout, and serves on multiple volunteer opportunities within nursing and currently serves on the Emergency Nurses Association EMS advisory Council, Alabama State Secretary, Alabama State Membership Chair.

Dr. Bass has an impressive educational background, with degrees from Mountain State University, Mercy School of Nursing, UNC-Charlotte, and Ohio University. He completed his Health Care Leadership, Systems, and Policy Doctor of Nursing Practice from Yale University in 2023, where he was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. Dr. Bass currently serves as the 2024 ENA Secretary Treasurer for the ENA Board of Directors and is employed at Atrium Health Cabarrus as the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services overseeing operations of three emergency departments with 130,000 visits annually, a trauma and forensic nursing program and a 23-bed Medical Observation Unit.
