Senior Quandamooka Weaver

SONJA CARMICHAEL

Drawing inspiration from the many stories connected to traditional Quandamooka weaving, Sonja Carmichael's practice explores contemporary materials and techniques that directly respond to concerns about the preservation of the natural environment. An active member in her community, she is a leader in the regeneration of Quandamooka weaving, passing on cultural knowledge and skills through workshops, exhibitions, and field research.

Made with her daughter Elisa Jane Carmichael, Sonja's works, Ungaire (freshwater reeds) (2023) and Quandamooka Gulayi (dillybag) (2023) are on permanent display at the Embassy of Australia.

RSVP essential. Photo ID required for entry. Parking not available at the embassy.
