Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office
Mounted Unit
Thank you to all who joined us for the Annual Badges and Bridles fundraiser on 10/08/22!
We had a wonderful event and look forward to next year!
Why should you support the Mounted Unit?
The Arapahoe Sheriff's office restarted the mounted patrol in 2019 after more than 30 years of dormancy due to funding and prioritization shifts. The horses used by deputies and volunteers are personally owned by their riders who are responsible for the daily care and maintenance including feed, hay, bedding, housing, veterinary and farrier expenses. The unit accepts donations to supplement the maintenance of the horses and equipment utilized to ensure the safety of the horses and riders. Community support is necessary to keep this Colorado heritage service active.

The Arapahoe Mounted Unit is Dedicated to the Safety and Development of our Community, that's a pretty cool thing to get behind!
Community Outreach
The mounted unit conducted over 100 community outreach programs in 2021 and we want to support the powerful programs they are brining to the community.  One of the most loved and impactful programs is the Reading to Horses program.  Deputies bring horses to schools and classes of 1st and 2nd grade students read a book to the horses. The book the students read was written and illustrated by mounted unit deputies and after the program each students gets to keep a copy of the book, thanks to donations from our community!
Fostering Youth Engagement
The mounted unit deputies work alongside volunteers from the community who range in age from 14 years old and up. These specially selected volunteers assist deputies with community outreach programs and ride with deputies on routine patrols to foster community spirit and enhance the safety of both the deputies and the horses. These volunteers assist the sheriff’s office in staying involved, up to date, and relevant with current community issues.
Promoting Community Safety
The mounted unit promotes community safety and partnership by employing horses (a creature everyone loves) to assist deputies with the various aspect of its mission statement. Particularly, horses help deputies with community outreach and routine patrols to help enhance the overall sheriff’s office mission by fostering community spirit. While citizens may not feel comfortable approaching a deputy in a patrol car to chat, they generally love to talk to a deputy on a horse!
An Oxford University study concluded that an increased visibility of "four legged law officers" lowers crime and increases public trust and confidence in their law enforcement.  Officers on horseback are 6 times more approachable than officers on foot, bikes or in cars.
Where do the funds go?
Donations raised through the Badges and Bridles event go to Back the Blue K9 Force, a 501c3 that supports law enforcement service animals.  Back the Blue will use 100% of the money from this event to provide care and equipment for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Mounted Unit horses, and to support community programs that the Mounted Unit provides like the Reading to Horses program.
