Behind the Behavior: Understanding What Your Child Is Communicating
PRESENTED BY: CAROLYN KUEHNEL, PH.D., NCSP

It is a common experience for parents to feel overwhelmed, confused, or frustrated by their child’s challenging behaviors. This presentation is designed to help parents shift their perspective from viewing behavior as a problem to be managed, to understanding it as a vital form of communication. Every tantrum, refusal, or emotional outburst is a signal that a child is trying to convey a need, feeling, or struggle that they may not yet have the words to express. By attending this session, you will gain a deeper understanding of the science of behavior, which will allow you to respond to your child with greater empathy, patience, and effectiveness. The goal is to equip you with practical, evidence-based tools that can reduce household stress and strengthen the connection between you and your child.

During this presentation, we will first demystify the concept of behavior by defining it in clear, observable terms. Parents will learn how to look past emotional reactions and focus on the specific actions their child is displaying, which is the first step in addressing any challenging situation. We will then explore the concept of behavioral functions, which refers to the underlying reasons why a child behaves a certain way. Understanding these functions allows parents to address the root cause of the behavior rather than simply reacting to the surface-level disruption.

Finally, we will address one of the most critical distinctions in child development: the difference between can't do and won't do. Parents often mistake a child's lack of skill or developmental readiness for willful defiance or laziness. This presentation will guide you in distinguishing between a skill deficit, where a child genuinely lacks the cognitive or emotional tools to comply, and a performance deficit, where they have the ability but lack the motivation or emotional regulation to do so in that moment. By learning to recognize this distinction, you can tailor your support to either teach a necessary skill or adjust your motivational strategies. You will leave this session with a comprehensive framework to help you interpret your child's actions, reduce power struggles, and foster a more supportive home environment.
