Anne T Henderson
Keynote Speaker | Senior Consultant
Anne’s specialty is the relationship between families and schools, and its impact on students’ success in school and through life. Since 1981, she has steadily tracked research and effective practice on how engaging families can improve student achievement and life prospects, especially in diverse and low-income communities. Anne consults with state and local education agencies, foundations, universities, and parent and community organizations to advance high-impact practices of family and community engagement that will improve student outcomes and promote equity.

Over the past 30 years, Anne has written, by herself and with others, a small library of reader-friendly articles, reports, handouts, and books. Her best-selling book, Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships, (NY: The New Press, 2007) was written with Karen Mapp, Vivian Johnson, and Don Davies. In the Evidence series, Anne has reviewed the research on the effects of parent and community engagement on student achievement. The latest edition, the fifth in the series, Everyone Wins! The Evidence for Family-School Partnerships and Implications for Practice, was published by Scholastic in 2022. It was written with Karen L. Anne is a founder and senior consultant with the National Association for Family, School and Community Engagement (NAFSCE). She also serves as Vice-Chair of the NAFSCE board. She has two grandchildren who attend public school in Washington, DC, where she lives.

Professional Experience
Education Policy Consultant and Author, Washington, DC
1994-present
Consult to school districts, foundations, state and national agencies and organizations, and research associations on projects and studies relating to education policy as it affects families and children's learning and development. Also conduct staff development and speak at local, state and national conferences and meetings on family and community engagement in education. Have written or co-authored many articles, reports, and books, including the best-selling Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships (The New Press, 2007); five research reviews on family and community engagement and its impact on student learning; a report for the National Education Association on teacher-led practices of family and community engagement (Family- School Community Engagement 2.0: Collaborative Strategies to Improve Student Learning, 2011). Also published articles in a variety of journals, including Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, PTA Today, Community Education Journal, Education Horizons and Education Digest. 
 
Senior Consultant National Committee for Citizens in Education.
1977-1994
Represented to Congress and federal agencies the concerns of this non-profit, public interest organization advocating parent and community involvement in public education. Managed several foundation-funded projects. These included establishing a national training and information center on school-based improvement, providing technical assistance and training to urban school districts implementing middle grades reform, and monitoring and reporting on the implementation of Chapter 2, the federal block grant for education..
 
Director of Community Relations, International Meditation Society, Washington DC,
1974 - 1977
Publicized program of non-profit educational organization teaching the Transcendental Meditation Program. Developed and administered instructional courses for business and government groups, spoke to conferences, meetings and public audiences; appeared on radio and television programs; and handled relations with the press. 
 
Special Assistant to the Commissioner New Jersey Department of Education, Trenton, NJ
1970-1973
Responsible for relationships with Congress and federal agencies; managed a series of special projects, including building education reform initiatives in Model Cities plans and implementing a major urban initiative across the agency's programs.

Designed and implemented a monitoring and evaluation system for legal services research and demonstration projects. Exceptional Achievement Award.

Analyzed and [prepared evidence to prosecute civil rights cases; tracked voter registration data; provided research assistance in studies of civil right law implementation.
