It was his late grandmother, Mrs. Kathleen "Doreen" Matthias, who was diagnosed with mulitple myeloma while he was in college, that led to Dr. Alleyne's decision to pursue a career in Epidemiology and Public Health. Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer, affecting tens of thousands of individuals and their families worldwide every day. While significant advances have been made in treatment options and patient survival, a cure remains to be discovered.
