WHY DRIVE? - a MESSAGE FROM OUR POST COMMANDER, Rafael De Jesus
"As a Veteran and proud member of the St. Cloud community, it is my honor to continue representing and leading this great organization. VFW Post 3227 has grown exponentially in recent years, thanks to the dedication of our members and their families, our patrons, and each member of the community.
Our Post prides itself on providing services to the community through events like Toys for Tots, mentoring local Eagle Scout troops, and sponsoring college scholarships for local students. Our Game Nights, including Chuck Wagon Bingo and Dominoes, along with our special events such as Game Day Cookouts and the St. Cloud Christmas Parade, are some of the many ways we provide a safe, fun, family-friendly environment in Historic Downtown St. Cloud. With the recent growth and success of our Post, is my sincere hope that our first annual Drive to Thrive goes off without a hitch!
We hope to see you on the green, but if you are unable to attend, we have a variety of sponsorship opportunities available. Feel free to contact the Post at any time for any questions or further information. We appreciate your generosity."
Please join us in supporting this historical piece of our city. 915 New York Ave is home to our Post today, but its history dates back to 1889. Then, it was known as the Sugar Belt Railway Depot. This railroad transported sugar cane and citrus between Narcoossee and Kissimmee, in efforts to slow sugar imports and promote local business. Running around the clock, the St. Cloud Sugar Mill was capable of producing over 200 tons of sugar each day. The success of the railway forever changed the local economy, and when the City of St. Cloud officially came to be in 1909, it became a city staple.
Since its inception, St. Cloud has been known as "Soldier City." Intended for Civil War Veterans and their families, its central location along the Sugar Belt Railway made it an ideal place to live. In 1910, The Depot was built as a welcome center for those new to St. Cloud. At the time, The Depot was a mere wood frame building. As part of welcoming new residents, the women of St. Cloud began placing books and magazines in The Depot, unknowingly establishing what would be the city's first library.
By 1925, The Depot supplied local residents and businesses with a variety of goods and became a popular destination for those traveling in and out of St. Cloud. This financial success allowed the city to renovate The Depot from a wood frame to a new brick building. This is the building the Veterans of Foreign Wars would purchase in 1943, after the Depot and Sugar Belt Railway ceased operations.
Our Post has occupied this space for over 75 years. In this time, it has provided a place for those who have served to build friendships and thrive in the community. In partnering with local businesses and organizations such as 10th St. Deli & Produce and the Boy Scouts of America, Post 3227 continues to carry on the legacy of the Sugar Belt Railway Depot. From Bingo Nights and Poker Runs to providing Meals on Wheels during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are proud to call St. Cloud our home.
The proceeds of this tournament are to benefit the renovation of our Post building. Much like the renovations made nearly 100 years ago, these changes will benefit not only our Post and its members, but will bring new life to Historic Downtown St. Cloud. It is our privilege and honor to represent this amazing organization and work with local patrons to guide us towards the future, where a strong sense of patriotism, fraternity, compassion, and comradery will continue to be our city's strengths. We hope you will consider joining us at our first annual Drive to Thrive event, and help us raise the revenue needed for this lofty but worthwhile project.
