The Story of Eddie and Amanda Clayton
“Till death did them part", Eddie Clayton and Amanda Glover Clayton’s 51-year marriage would leave a lasting Legacy. Their story begins here, Eddie Clayton was born to Prince Clayton and Katherine Burros Cobbs in February of 1892 in the Verdier Township of Colleton County in Weeks, South Carolina. At age 8, Eddie lived a few houses away from a little girl named Amanda Glover. Mandee as she was called as a little girl, was born in July of 1897 in the Dorchester Township of Dorchester County in Grover, SC. She was “PJ Glover’s daughter by his second wife” as she was known to often say. Her father was Phillip Joseph Glover. His second wife, Mandee’s mother, was Tiller “Lulu” Henderson.
Little did Eddie and Mandee know they would grow up, get married, and that their love would flourish into a hierarchy with deep and sustaining roots. Roots that have sprouted into a strong family tree of 11 branches filled with many leaves. They married around 1910. Their marriage was deeply rooted in their love for God and their family.
They are fondly remembered as Papa Edd and Mama Gallie. He was a tall, stern, well-respected man who provided for his family as a sharecropper and farm laborer. She was a lively lady who smoked a pipe and it wasn't unusual to see her by her husband's side in the fields. Story has it that on weekends, Papa Edd would go from house to house visiting his children and grandchildren. Mama Gallie was known to give each of her grandchildren nicknames and was famous for making them an old-fashioned cake, baked with syrup, called sweetbread.
Resting eternally side by side at Redbank United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walterboro, SC, Father Eddie preceded his wife in death in August of 1961, at the age of 69. Mother Amanda would later be laid to rest on November 6, 1969, at the age of 72. The Legacy of their union lives on through their 11 children, five sons and six daughters, Hilliard Clayton, Lettie Clayton Bennett, Robert Lee Clayton, Esdone Clayton, Pearlie Clayton Green, Lottie Mae Clayton Bowman, Tillie Clayton Nesmith, Annie Mae Clayton Simmons, Catherine Clayton Moore, Edd Lee Clayton, and Louis Clayton.
