About Alycia
Evidence Based Birth® Instructor | Birth (DONA) and Bereavement Doula | Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
I am passionate about empowering families to actively prepare for childbirth and parenthood. I emphasize the process of education and preparation to combat the fear of uncertainty. The story of your birth cannot be predicted or planned, but the process of preparation and building a trusted support team will help you and your partner navigate the process so that you emerge with the confidence that you were knowledgeable about your care, your body, and were treated with respect.

Through my first career as an emergency veterinarian (10 years), I learned first-hand that medicine is as much a science as it is an art. I learned the value of communication and patient-centered care. I found that in uncontrollable situations, knowledge, communication, and preparation allowed clients to feel supported and empowered in the outcomes. My medical background and ability to “see the fine print” allows me to educate on navigating pros and cons and the complexities of labor situations. I help students communicate effectively with their providers and advocate for their safest and most empowered birth experience.

I love seeing when birthing families understand something about themselves and feel more confident in their abilities. No course will replace experience, but I hope to be a guide and resource in their journey: someone they can trust who is on their side. I also feel strongly that those basic principles ultimately benefit birthing persons in uplifting them as true owners and operators of their own bodies, their choices, and their own place in the world as people and birthers.
Alycia and Evidence Based Birth® are committed to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for pregnant persons of any age, religion, race, sexual identity, gender identity or relationship status.

Alycia encouraged us to feel empowered with our nurses, doctors and care providers to exercise what we had learned from the class. We learned from our EBB class that we needed to know what the risks and benefits of our choices would be, and that’s how Alycia presents information.

Alycia is not only committed to sharing the data and evidence around birth, but able to speak to the nuances of the science (as there is rarely a black and white answer). I’m a type-A and anxious individual who relies heavily on science to make my decisions. I frequently bombarded Alycia with questions and she presented me with the nuances of the research available, helping me make educated decisions based on my priorities and values.

It's a must do if you want to go into birth feeling confident in your abilities and your rights. I learned so much about how to take care of myself and feel empowered in birth!

FAQ
When should I start a childbirth class?
It will only be too late once baby is here! Ideally, we recommend completing a class in your early third trimester (32/33 weeks). However, we have had families in their early second trimester, late third trimester, and third-timers!
Is this class geared towards unmedicated or medicated births?
This class is designed to prepare all types of birth families, without judgement, seeking all manner of birth choices. We do discuss pharmacological options and their pros and cons, but we equip everyone to have a full comfort measure toolbox. You never know what you will need!
What COVID-19 precautions do you take?
Policies are changing all the time. We believe in keeping your families safe from not just COVID-19 but all illnesses than can affect your health during pregnancy. This is why we offer planned virtual check ins and limit our in-person classes to 2 meetings, with small group sizes, the option to mask, and make-up flexibility. We recognize the benefit of in-person practice and community-building, but we strive to avoid transmission of diseases to our susceptible families.
What is your refund policy?
Your payment reserves a spot in the class and is non-refundable, but tickets are transferable with adequate notice and approval from Alycia.
Is this class only for planned hospital births?
This class has a large focus on advocacy and communication in the healthcare system, which, more than any other class out there, equips you to be empowered and confident in that space. However, we go over a full spectrum of comfort techniques and birth preparation that is valuable for out-of-hospital birth choices. We believe that learning about medical interventions and advocacy is important, even if you are planning a homebirth, as it can be especially hard if a transfer is necessary. Knowing how to ask questions and navigate those unplanned interventions is valuable.
I would prefer a private 1:1 class. What are my options?
Yes! I personally offer a limited number of 1:1 spots per year. Contact me for more information if you want a private class on your schedule!
What if I have more than one support person who wants to learn?
Message me and let me know! We welcome all the support for your birth. We have special options for doulas, as well. The more, the merrier!
I don't have 6 weeks to take this class. Is there an accelerated option?
Due to the sheer amount of information, we do not recommend doing the class in less than 3 weeks. There is my 1:1 option to take the class on your own schedule and at your own pace. My wonderful doula friend/mentor/co-teacher Tara Thompson also teaches more accelerated courses. Contact her here.
