PRESENTED BY: MICHELLE GAUDET, M.ED., LABA
Executive functioning skills are the cognitive tools that help children regulate their emotions, manage their time, stay organized, and make decisions. When these skills are developing typically, students are better equipped to navigate the academic and social demands of daily life. However, when a child struggles with executive functioning, parents often observe frequent emotional outbursts, challenges with focusing attention, difficulty completing tasks, and trouble adapting to new situations. Without proper support, these challenges can persist and become more difficult to manage as academic demands increase. If these struggles sound familiar, it is important to know that you are not alone and that these behaviors are not a reflection of your parenting. Rather, they are often a sign that your child needs extra support to develop the organizational and regulation skills necessary for daily success.
During this presentation, our guest speaker will explore the concept of executive functioning, helping parents understand how these skills impact a child's daily behavior and emotional regulation. We will discuss why a child might experience frustration or melt down when faced with multi-step tasks, long-term projects, or sudden changes in routine. By shifting our perspective to view these struggles as areas where a child needs guidance rather than intentional defiance, we can begin to respond with more targeted assistance. This workshop will provide parents with a foundational understanding of executive functioning, allowing you to better recognize where your child might be getting stuck in their daily routines.
Ultimately, this session focuses on introducing practical ideas to help parents support their children's organizational and self-regulation development. We will discuss common strategies for supporting time management, task initiation, and organization at home, with the goal of reducing daily friction and homework battles. Parents will learn about ways to break down tasks to prevent overwhelm and help children build better awareness of their own actions. You will leave this workshop with a helpful framework for understanding executive functioning and practical, accessible ideas to start supporting your child’s organizational habits at home.
