DESCRIPTION
The EGHI/GA Tech Global Health Hackathon provides multidisciplinary student teams from both institutions an opportunity to create technology-based product solutions for global health problems.  The goal is for student teams to develop marketable products. We welcome and encourage undergraduate and graduate students from all majors and disciplines to participate!
Teams of Emory University and Georgia Tech students compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to take their solution to market through GT's CREATE-X Startup Launch during summer 2024.

This is a collaboration among the Emory Global Health Institute, GA Tech's CREATE X, the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech & Emory, and The Hatchery Center for Innovation.

HACKATHON THEME
The Fall 2023 EGHI/GT Hackathon will be centered on projects that present solutions to tackle problems related to climate change, with a focus on the theme areas outlined below. These themes are provided to bring direction to the solutions you propose, not to limit your creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. We look forward to seeing your innovative proposals!

Climate change has been called the greatest global health challenge and opportunity of this century. For this global challenge, impacts will be felt locally and differ by location. Local and global solutions are critical.

  • Climate Change and Urban Flooding in Atlanta. Atlantans in parts of the city are facing urban flooding during and after major storm events (see an article about a recent event here). Propose a product or digital solution that enhances climate resilience to urban flooding and/or addresses a direct or related public health concern for those affected.
  • Climate Change and Urban Heat in Atlanta.  Climate Change is expected to dramatically increase the number of extreme heat days in Georgia—heat that will be amplified in Atlanta by the urban heat island effect. In Atlanta, many households already face energy insecurity and a high energy burden, and worsening extreme heat related to climate change risks compounding this existing environmental justice concern. Propose a product or digital solution that addresses a direct or related public health concern for communities facing high energy burden and urban heat effects.
  • Global Sea Level Rise in Densely Populated, Low-Resource Urban Settings.  In many areas of the world, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, rising sea levels and the impacts of coastal flooding are threatening health and security, particularly in places that have dense, coastal informal settlements. Propose a product or digital solution that addresses a direct or related public health concern for urban communities facing sea level rise and coastal flooding.
