Foundation Seminar
April 6-7, 2024
Our seminars were created to help bird dog owners more fully understand their dogs and provide owners a complete and proven training system to rely on. A keystone of our training format rests in increasing each dog’s Confidence, Compliance, and Composure through intentional interaction and experiences. Each training lesson is laid out in an easy to follow format and tailored to each dog’s mindset and individual needs.

We believe that understanding the animal you are working with and their current state of mind is critical for the success of any training session. Every session of the seminar will be taught with accompanied in-depth discussion on mindset and “why” each dog acts or reacts as it does. It is our continual goal to provide fresh insight into each dog’s perspective and how they function and respond to the environment around them. Learning to read a dog’s body language and how to develop a deeper level of communication with them is an ever improving and evolving process.

Just like our children, dogs require preparation in order to be able to be successful in the world. One of the first steps in developing a dog is “teaching your dog how to learn.” This develops a dog that is willingly and happily looking for leadership from his handler and is a “joined up” member of working team. We start small, in controlled environments and build up to the more challenging concepts.

Everything we do centers around building strong, healthy, and receptive mindsets in our dogs as we follow the step-by-step curriculum. The Foundation Seminar covers the first of the three stages of curriculum. This is the basis for all of the more advanced skills we will be teaching our bird dogs in the Intermediate and then the Advanced Seminars.

During this seminar we will teach bird dog owners essential behaviors each bird dog needs to know and how to begin developing those with their dogs.

Core Bird Dog Behaviors we will focus on:

Go With You

This Core Behavior begins with a good loose lead heel, progressing to an off lead heel, and then to going with you at a distance in the hunting field. The mindset of Going With You is one of the early indicators of a dog joining up with you.

Come To You
Every dog needs a solid recall, which is also the foundation for a good natural retrieve.

Stand Still
The ultimate challenge for bird dogs is the Core Behavior of standing still, particularly in moments of excitement. This includes standing still on point, during a back/honor, when standing beside his owner, at a gate/door, on the vet table, and a multitude of other situations.

In addition to beginning to implement concepts of Core Bird Dog Behaviors, attendees will have the opportunity work with their dogs on:

- Socialization
- General good manners
- Building prey drive / prey chase through bird work
- Learning to work scent
- Shaping pointing behavior
- Introducing honoring situations
- Introduction to Tie-outs
- Checkcording drills
- Building Points of Contact for handling and stopping
- Obedience
- Heeling on a loose lead

If you feel your dog is not quite ready for formal training, that is okay! We will give you all the information that you need to develop your young dog and prepare him for the Foundation Level. During the seminar, we will include your dog in the exercises that he is ready for. Don’t let this seminar opportunity pass you by if your dog is not at the age for formal training, there is still a lot of benefit to be gained by both you and your dog by attending!

Well mannered and proficient bird dogs do not happen by accident. Intentional interaction and experiences are requisites. Good training positively impacts dogs for life, boosting their confidence, compliance, and composure.

Let's start shaping strong bird dogs together!
