Friday Herb Hub
Join us on 5 June 2026
An afternoon of insight, herbs and creative exchange.

Joanna Teasdale, CEO of the RCHM will open the Conference weekend with our Friday Herb Hub, a relaxed and stimulating afternoon bringing colleagues together in conversation, curiosity and shared learning.

Malika Meddings
Malika will begin with a short welcome and opening reflection on Wu Wei as a gentle strategic lens for communication, considering how alignment, clarity and integrity can guide the way we speak about our work and our profession.

Mazin Al-Khafaji
A pioneer of Chinese herbal dermatology in the UK, Mazin will share clinical insights drawn from decades of practice. His work continues to shape the way practitioners approach complex and chronic skin conditions, integrating classical understanding with contemporary clinical realities. Expect depth, experience and practical wisdom.

Andrew Flower
Andrew brings his trademark rigour and curiosity to the evolving conversation around the microbiome – with a particular focus on the bladder. Bridging research and traditional theory, he will explore how emerging understandings of microbial ecology intersect with Chinese herbal thinking and clinical application.

Martin Powell
Martin will turn our attention to medicinal mushrooms, exploring their place within both traditional practice and modern herbal discourse. With clarity and thoughtful analysis, he will examine how these fascinating substances sit at the intersection of tradition, pharmacology and contemporary interest.

Ralitsa Dimitrova
Ralitsa will demonstrate how to transform our deep herb knowledge into compelling digital communication. By focusing on practical creation, she will help us craft confident, intelligent and authentic social media narratives that honour the tradition while connecting powerfully with today’s audiences.

An afternoon to reconnect, exchange ideas and set the tone for the days ahead.

Using Wu Wei to Navigate Modern Communication - Malika Meddings
How to use the principles of Wu Wei as a Strategy in Communication for our practices and to let people know about Chinese Herbal Medicine.
      13:00
Pattern-based treatment strategy from acute flare to long-term stabilisation - Mazin Al-Khafaji FRCHM
Atopic Eczema (atopic dermatitis) - Of the dozen or so forms of eczema that exist, atopic eczema is easily the commonest, having reached truly epidemic proportions over the past few decades in the US & Europe. It is associated with allergic disease such as asthma, allergic rhinitis as well as food allergies.
Chinese medicine has proved so effective in treating this distressing disease, in my opinion no practitioner should be unaware of the essentials of treatment. Not only is it excellent at controlling the acute phases, but crucially in most cases, it's able to restore an equilibrium to the body that ensures long term stability of the skin.
In this short talk I will be using clinical cases from my own practice to outline in practical ways the fundamental theoretical concepts that you would need to guide you in choosing the best approaches to achieve success in practice.

Treating chronic urinary tract infections with Chinese herbal medicine by changing the ecology of the bladder - Andrew Flower MRCHM
Recurrent or chronic urinary tract infections, often associated with growing antimicrobial resistance, are an increasingly common problem in clinical practice. Symptoms such as constant bladder and urethral pain, frequency, haematuria, psychological distress, and systemic malaise can be devastating for those (predominantly women) unfortunate enough to suffer from this condition. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) can be an effective intervention to help people reduce and resolve these symptoms, to stop long-term antibiotics, and to return to a state of good health. Whereas Western medicine focusses on eradicating pathogenic bacteria, CHM takes a more holistic approach that combines eliminating toxins with the restoration of a healthy ecology in the bladder. This lecture will discuss the methods used to achieve this which are based on over a decade of research and clinical experience treating this condition.
      15:30
Mushrooms and Longevity - Martin Powell
The talk will examine the potential of mushrooms to promote healthy ageing and longevity with reference to the major factors contributing to ill-health as we age. It will look at the six most common causes of death in the UK and discuss the potential benefits of mushrooms in general and specific mushrooms in particular for each of them, both in helping reduce the incidence of each and in assisting with their treatment.
