Nativity scenes often include a fascinating variety of figures beyond Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child. But who are these individuals, and why are they there?

In this engaging seminar, Father Johann Roten explores the history, symbolism, and spiritual significance of the many unique figures traditionally represented in nativity scenes. Discover how each character contributes to a richer understanding of the mystery of the Incarnation and the Christmas story.

This presentation expands upon the highly acclaimed talk Father Roten delivered at the 2025 Friends of the Creche Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Father Roten is a founding member of Friends of the Creche and Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton, internationally recognized for his scholarship on Marian studies, Christian art, and the traditions of the Nativity.


An Online Seminar is a free Zoom meeting where Friends of the Creche members give presentations about their nativity set collections, exhibits, and the joy of being a nativity collector. You must register so that we can send you instructions on joining the meeting. Instructions will be sent to your email at least one week ahead of the meeting.

The Online Seminar will run for 60-90 minutes and is open to EVERYONE. You do not need to be a member of FOTC to attend. Please invite your friends and family who love nativities to join us.
