The DES PTO and Laurie Birkholz, MD & Associates are excited to bring Dr. Carrie Leff, a national expert in Adolescent and Women’s Health, to west Michigan to share her expertise with local parents.

FROM TODDLERS TO TEENS:
HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT THEIR BODIES, PUBERTY, AND SEX

Most children want to learn about sexual health from their most trusted resource, their parents, but most parents feel unprepared for this task. This talk will help you learn what you need to know to get started having talks about puberty and sexual health with your kids. Dr. Leff will break down these talks into different age groups, starting with toddlers, and give you all the resources you need to have at home to be successful. No matter the age of your child, you won’t want to miss this excellent presentation. Topics covered include:

· What conversations with kids look like at ages 0-4, ages 4-7, ages 7-11 and the teen years
· Body positive and sex positive language
· The puberty time-line
· The difference between sex, gender, gender expression and sexuality
· Sex-ed in school versus at home
· Resources to help parents with difficult conversation

About Dr. Carrie Leff
Dr. Carrie Leff is a board certified Pediatrician and Internist and Certified Menopause Provider who practices primary care through The Henry Ford Health System in Southeastern Michigan.  Dr. Leff is passionate about all aspects of women’s health, but has a special interest in adolescent medicine, treatment of eating disorders, mental health issues, menopause and sexual health.  Dr. Leff received her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and completed her medical degree at Midwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

In 2015, Dr. Leff co-founded Turning Teen (www.turningteen.com), a company which provides educational workshops about puberty for parents and children both in person and virtually. The goal of the program is to help transition adolescents through puberty without shame or embarrassment. She believes in empowering parents with the language and knowledge on how to tackle important and difficult conversations with their children. Dr. Leff is the author of the book, “Celebrate your Body 2: The Ultimate Puberty Book for Preteen and Teen Girls,” which is a body-positive guide to puberty for girls ages 10 and older.
She recently published an opinion piece in the Washington post entitled “Our book on puberty has been banned. This only puts kids at risk.” (Link below)
