1933-2023
Sushila Devi Mohanka, wife of late Dr. Mahadeo Chand, was born in Kolkata on September 28, 1933, to father Gauri Shakar Dalmia, and mother Panna D. Khemka. The oldest of seven siblings: Govind Dalmia, late Geeta Jalan, late Bhama Salarpuria, late Pushpa Chopra, Jaya Dokania, and late Manju Meharia. Mother to Kiran Khaitan (Pawan Khaitan), Dr. Shail Jain (Dr. Thanmal Jain), and Dr. Shobha Khandelwal (Dr. Anand Khandelwal). Grandmother to eight, great-grandmother to twelve, and generous loving elder to a global community. Sushila Mohanka grew up in Jasidih, Jharkhand, where her father was involved in social work and was a freedom fighter for India’s independence movement. Inspired by his activism, from the age of ten, Sushila had a calling to make the world better for those who didn’t have a voice. She only wore khadhi, handmade cotton – a revolutionary movement started by Mahatma Gandhi, symbolizing simplicity and promoting Indian economic independence. After marriage, she settled in Patna, Bihar with her late husband, Dr. Mahadeo Chand. She completed her B.A. at Patna University, Magadh Mahila College. She and Dr. Chand always stood strong in their values, opening their home to domestic violence survivors and others in need, and refusing to attend any weddings in which dowry was given or women were forced to wear veils. She and her husband were actively involved in Rotary and pioneered the Rotary Ann’s in India, now known as Rotary Spouses. In 1983 she founded Akhil Bhartiya Marwari Mahila Sammelan (All India Women's Marwari Association), in Patna, Bihar, an organization founded to socially and economically empower women. Through this organization she met with Indira Gandhi and shared the most pressing women’s issues of the time, leading to meaningful change at the Congressional level. She visited more than 100 towns in 12 different states in India and Nepal to learn about the greatest challenges for women. The organization remains active to this day, with more than 230,000 members, transforming the lives of women and uplifting communities. In 1993 her work was honored with the Mahila Ratna Award (Woman of the Year) presented by Mother Teresa from the International Friendship Society. After she moved to the US in 1990 she became deeply involved in the International Hindi Association, with a dream of keeping Hindi language and culture alive globally. She held several leadership roles, including: Treasurer (2006-2008), Secretary (2008-2009), President (2012-2013), Trustee Chairperson (2016-2021), Chief Managing Editor of the quarterly Vishwa magazine (2017-2023), and the monthly newsletter, Samwad, for the last two years. Sushila Mohanka’s spirit and impact is timeless. Her service came in many forms – through her commitment and dedication to family, to her community, and to those organizations that were dear to her heart. She gave her love unconditionally to everyone and taught us all the importance of family and service above self. She was a pillar of wisdom and strength not only for her family, but also her wider community. She will continue to live on in all of us. As she believed, “Pariwar ko hamesha saat rakhna, pariwar saath le keh chalna,” Always keep your family with you – and by family, she meant the whole community.
