Geography
Luxor
Luxor sits in southern Upper Egypt along the River Nile, roughly 504 to 670 kilometers south of Cairo.
Location and Coordinates:
  • Coordinates: Approximately 25.6872° N, 32.6396° E.
  • Distance: About 220 km north of Aswan and 650 km south of Cairo.
  • Region: Capital of the Luxor Governorate in Upper Egypt.
Three Geographical Areas
The geography of Luxor divides naturally across the Nile River into three main zones:
  • 1. East Bank (City of Luxor): The modern town and market center. It holds the active Luxor Temple and the massive Karnak Temple just to the north.
  • 2. Karnak, located immediately north of the central city, is renowned for its vast temple enclosures.
  • 3. West Bank (Theban Necropolis): Located across the river. It features the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, and various mortuary temples set against rocky desert cliffs.
Landscape and Climate:
  • The Nile Valley: The city occupies a narrow, fertile river valley bordered by arid desert hills and plateaus.
  • Climate: A desert climate featuring scorching summers and mild, warm winters with virtually zero rainfall.

Armant:
Armant is a town in Upper Egypt located on the west bank of the Nile River, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Luxor (ancient Thebes).
  • Coordinates: Situated at approximately 25.62° N latitude and 32.54° E longitude.
  • Governorate: Part of the Luxor Governorate in Egypt.
  • Position: Lies directly on the west bank of the Nile River in a flat, fertile river valley.
  • Elevation: Rises roughly 81 to 85 meters above sea level.

Esna
Esna is a historic city located on the west bank of the Nile River in Upper Egypt, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) south of Luxor.
Key Geographical Features:
  • Location: Situated in southern Egypt within the Luxor Governorate (having shifted from Qena Governorate in 2009).
  • River Position: Lies on the western arterial bank of the Nile, positioned directly between Luxor to the north and Edfu to the south.
  • Topography & Elevation: The surrounding landscape is characterized by the narrow, fertile Nile Valley ribbon flanked by arid desert. Centuries of accumulated silt and debris have caused parts of the ancient city—such as the famous Temple of Khnum (Temple of Esna)—to now sit roughly 9 meters below the modern street level.
  • Hydrology: Esna is renowned for the Esna Lock (Esna Barrage), an important engineering structure built across the Nile to regulate water flow, control irrigation levels, and assist river navigation.
