The MOD X Washington 2026 exchange, offered in partnership with the WA Starter Home Plan, is a housing event with engagements over two days aimed to increase capacity and competency for starter home production in the state through the development of a regional housing innovation ecosystem

The activities include a HUB Workshop on October 19th and a Field Tour and Learning Lab on October 20th. The exchange is in partnership with the Starter Home Production Plan (SHP) and precedes the annual Housing WA Conference held in Spokane in October 2026. The exchange is free, made possible through the sponsorship of JPMorgan Chase.*

Housing Innovation HUB Summit

MOD X and SHP have led two virtual workshops prior to meeting in Spokane. In this culminating in-person gathering, MOD X will facilitate an “Implementation Workshop” to further develop a plan to start a housing innovation hub in the state. Apply to participate and inform the development of a plan. The workshop has space for up to 75 participants.

Housing Innovation Field Tour

The tour will visit two housing innovation sites via Spokane Transit System bus – Blockhouse Life, a missing middle infill development in the South Perry District of Spokane and Mercer Mass Timber, a building products factory. The purpose of the field tour is to demonstrate the potential of industrialized, biogenic prefabricated housing systems and small-scale housing development to meet the needs of Washington. The tour will commence at the Spokane Convention Center, leaving at 8:30 am and returning at 12:30pm. The bus has space for up to 50 registrants.

Starter Home Plan Learning Laboratory

Learning Laboratories 1 and 8 are on the first afternoon, October 20th, of the Housing WA Conference from 1:00pm -4:00pm. They will feature an overview of the Starter Home Production Plan with deep dives into land and development, policy and regulation, finance, workforce and disaster response. The lab will feature presentations and panel discussion by housing innovation experts Tedd Benson of Bensonwood / Unity Homes, Mark Laliberte from Construction Instruction, and Ryan Smith of MOD X. [1] Washington state’s Comprehensive and Scalable Starter Home Production Plan (SHP) is a statewide strategy to align public, private, and nonprofit efforts around scaling affordable for-sale starter homes for low- and moderate-income Washingtonians through innovative financing and offsite/modern methods of construction (MMC). The plan was mandated by the state legislature and facilitated by Civic Commons in partnership with the Washington State Housing Finance Commission.
