Pre-Conference Course Outline & Learning Objectives
Driver Rehabilitation and the New Driver (7 hour course + 1 hour Q&A)
This course will provide driving instructors with the tools and knowledge to provide proper screening for students with disabilities, determine if they should be referred to a driver rehabilitation specialist for further evaluation and training to promote their success behind the wheel, as well as how to complete the referral process. This is a great opportunity to expand the services at your driver education program to promote inclusivity and access to driving as a means of independent community mobility for populations with disability.

Working with special populations requires knowledge of the best practices for delivering driver rehabilitation services. The increased understanding and time needed for this specialized area of practice requires processes and procedures that may not be addressed in some programs or when making a referral. This course will provide necessary information for the driver educator to work with novice drivers with disabilities with attention given to how disabilities may impact driving and learning.

Attendees will be provided ADED New Driver Toolkit for Driver Educators which provides essential items needed for use with novice drivers with disabilities that may require driver rehabilitation. This toolkit includes glossaries, resources, and checklists to gather information that will help streamline processes for working with special populations.

  • Understand best practices related to novice drivers with disabilities.
  • Analyze the roles and responsibilities for working with novice drivers with disabilities for driver education and training.
  • Discuss the Spectrum of Driver Services and the team approach to providing driver rehabilitation services.
  • Implement the use of tools and checklists to help determine driver readiness for on-road training.
  • Identify perceptual, physical and cognitive challenges associated with common acquired and congenital disabilities and will appreciate -how these challenges can affect driving performance.
  • Review guidelines for client referrals for a healthcare assessment.
  • Review the strategies for intervention, such as re-evaluation, driver cessation, potential plan of care for training, and how to determine if training is not appropriate.
  • Develop procedures for driver education and training for novice drivers with disabilities.
  • Understand ADED’s Best Practice Guidelines for the Delivery of Driver Rehabilitation Services for working with special populations.
  • Review best practices for documentation and communication with the client and other professionals.
