​​​​OBERLIN COLLEGE IMPACT INVESTMENT SYMPOSIUM
Hosted by the Oberlin Investment Committee, Oberlin Investment Office, and the Oberlin Center for Impact Finance, the third edition of the Oberlin Impact Investment Symposium will take place virtually on April 23, 2026. The symposium aims to help those entrusted with the growth and management of endowments to navigate the complex issues of fiduciary roles and responsibilities within impact-focused portfolios, guiding participants in understanding their role as stewards of ethical investments.

Through speakers and guided questions, the symposium engages participants in structural exploratory discussions on various critical themes at the forefront of sustainable investing for college endowments.

For the 2026 symposium, themes will include: Decarbonization through Transition Finance: Systemic Levers Institutional Investors Can Push, and Opportunities and Challenges Shaping the Gender Lens Investing Landscape in 2026.

The Intentional Endowments Network is a non-profit, peer-learning network advancing intentionally designed endowments that seek to enhance financial performance by making investments that advance an equitable, low-carbon, and regenerative economy. Working closely with leading organizations, the network engages leaders and key stakeholders from higher education, foundations, business, and nonprofits. It provides opportunities for learning and education, peer networking, convening, thought leadership, and information exchange around various strategies (e.g., ESG integration, impact investing, and shareholder engagement).

Financing the Transition: A Systems-Level Approach

Dan Chu
Executive Director, Sierra Club Foundation.

Dan joined the Sierra Club Foundation as Executive Director in November 2016. The Sierra Club Foundation is the fiscal sponsor for the Sierra Club’s efforts to address the climate crisis, protect land and waters, get people outdoors in nature and advance social justice. Previously, he served as the National Director of the Sierra Club’s Our Wild America campaign and the Vice President for regional programs and affiliates at the National Wildlife Federation.

Dan started his environmental advocacy career as a door-to-door canvasser in Colorado, and then as Executive Director for Wyoming Wildlife Federation. He is a returned Peace Corps Panama (1991-1993) agroforestry volunteer and holds a Master’s of Science in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado. He cares deeply about accelerating the shift of trillions of dollars from an extractive/exploitative economy to one that is restorative and just for all.  Dan is also the proud parent of a 2021 Oberlin Graduate.

Sara E. Murphy
Director of Shifting Trillions, Sierra Club Foundation.

Sara E. Murphy joined Sierra Club Foundation as Director of System-Level Investing in August 2025. Sara has spent the bulk of her 27-year career in sustainable investing, corporate responsibility, and environmental and social advocacy. Most recently, Sara was Chief Strategy Officer at The Shareholder Commons, a non-profit advocate for diversified shareholders. Sara began her career in the international development and disaster response fields. In 2001, she transitioned into Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) research for the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC), where she specialized in bioengineering and defense contracting research. After leaving IRRC, Sara spent several years at The Cadmus Group, an environmental consultancy. In 2005, Sara moved to Frankfurt, Germany to join Fortis Investments’ SRI fund management team as a senior sustainability analyst. Fortis Investments was acquired by BNP Paribas Asset Management during Sara’s tenure.

Sara moved back to Washington, DC in 2011, where she ran her independent consultancy on sustainable investing and corporate responsibility for a decade before joining The Shareholder Commons. Sara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in French and Spanish, and a Master of Arts degree from George Mason University in Economics. Sara grew up in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, which fundamentally shaped her understanding of the business world’s long reach and influence.

Gender Lens Investing in 2026: Opportunities & Challenges

Christine Cappabianca
VP & Portfolio Manager, Systematic Strategies,
Impax Asset Management

Christine has been working in the investment industry, specializing in quantitative analysis, since 2007. As a Portfolio Manager, she co-manages several key strategies, including Impax’s Global Women’s Leadership, US Sustainable Economy, and International Sustainable Economy. She leads efforts to generate data-driven insights from sustainable and thematic investment universes, utilizing advanced quantitative methods and AI techniques.

Before joining Impax Asset Management in 2021, Christine worked at BNY Investments involved in quantitative research and portfolio management for the firm’s thematic strategies. She also served as the ESG data expert on Mellon’s ESG Council, ensuring that data and sustainability metrics powered active portfolios.

Christine holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and a master’s degree in investment management from Boston University. She holds the SASB FSA Credential.
Sadie Saxton
Senior Associate, Institutional Business Development,
 Impax Asset Management

Sadie Saxton is an Institutional Business Development Associate at Impax Asset Management. In this role, Sadie supports institutional sales and defined contribution opportunities.

Prior to joining Impax, Sadie was a Fulbright Scholar based in La Rioja, Spain.

Sadie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Environmental Studies from Bowdoin College. She was a member of the College’s Cross Country and Track teams.

Heather Smith,
Co-head of Stewardship,
Impax Asset Management

Heather is a member of the Impax Sustainability Centre and is responsible for managing Impax Asset Management’s stewardship activities. In this role, she oversees the firm’s company engagement and proxy voting and development of thematic engagement priorities. Heather is also a member of Impax’s Inclusion Group, previously serving as its Co-Chair.

Prior to joining Impax in 2007, Heather was a legislative aide for the New Hampshire State Senate.

Heather holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and an MBA from the University of New Hampshire.
