Old Field's Vaughn Chapel Church 130th Celebration
Join us on May 24 - 26
Church Creek's esteemed Black community known as "Old Field" is distinctive not just because it neighbors the ancestral home of Dorchester County's freedom fighter Harriet Tubman. After emancipation, Old Field residents erected Vaughn Chapel in 1894 as both a place of worship and as the center of organizing to uplift the community with aspirations of preparing future generations for success.

Pictured above (undated): members of the Beverly United Stock Club, originated in the early 1900s to improve the financial status of Old Field residents (sometimes referred to as "Oldfield").

Descendants of the families with roots in both the church and the county's first school for Black children "Beverly" convene annually in remembrances of all who came through Old Field and to honor of those who rest eternally in the neighboring cemetery. The "Homecoming Service" began in the 1950s under the guidance and with the wisdom of Oldfield Church Creek Improvement Association (OFCCCIA).
