One Hour Dress
It is 100 years since the so-called One Hour Dress was popularised among home sewists in 1924 – and it is still a beautifully wearable dress today!
Infinitely customisable and flattering on most body types, the pattern is extremely easy to create and to sew.

In honour of the Bendigo Art Gallery’s exhibition, Paris: Impressions of Life 1880–1925, this two day workshop will show you how to make a pattern from your own measurements, and sew your own One Hour Dress.

Does it really only take one hour to make?
Well, if you already have the pattern, are highly skilled and are not adding any fancy details, maybe. However, this dress is very simple to make and to customise. You should be able to make yours within the two day workshop.

Day 1
Discuss the options, take measurements and create a basic pattern to work with. Cut your chosen fabric and make a start.

Day 2
Sew and finish your One Hour Dress, including simple desired embellishments/additions.

What to bring:
• Pencils and or pens, eraser, ruler
• Your own sewing machine
• Your own overlocker (if you have one – not absolutely necessary)
• Sewing tools, such as measuring tape, scissors, needles, thread, etc.
• Fabric and any decorative extras you would like to consider using.
• Something for lunch (nearby bakery is open on Saturday only)
• Your creative brain!
You will be able to choose and buy suitable fabric and thread while you are there, if desired.

What is provided:
• Pattern paper (You may choose to use your own vilene instead, as a more durable option. Vilene is also purchasable from the House of Cloth)
• Pattern weights
• Extra rulers
• Extra sewing machine and overlocker

Suitable fabrics:
As this dress is so versatile, you can make it from many different types and weights of fabric, depending on the desired result. Summery cottons or linens, slinky silks, wintery wool crepe or twill and even a light weight denim are all suitable options.

Allow at least two lengths of fabric (110 cm minimum width), measured from the top of your shoulder at the neck to the desired length, plus 10 cm. Use your judgement if you think you will need more fabric (for unusually large sizes or extra details).

Places are limited to 6 people maximum. Don’t miss out: book now!
