PAVEMENT Workshops
The PAVEMENT workshops are designed as intensive, immersive experiences that bridge the gap between conceptual vision and practical execution. Limited to 8 Participants, each workshop follows a rigorous three-phase structure:

Friday Evening: The Pre-Meet
The weekend begins with an essential orientation and faculty introduction. This initial session serves to align your creative intent with the instructor’s specific methodology, establishing the technical and thematic goals for the days ahead.

Saturday & Sunday Morning: Field Sessions
Participants spend all of Saturday and Sunday morning on the street, engaging in active shooting sessions. During this time, the focus is on remaining flexible and adaptable to the urban environment while developing a heightened sensitivity to the human condition and rapidly changing societal narratives.

Sunday Afternoon: The PAVEMENT Lab
Following lunch on Sunday, all workshop tracks reconvene at the PAVEMENT Lab. This three-hour culling and editing intensive transitions from the street to the screen. Guided by the faculty, you will analyze your weekend’s work, learning to identify images with emotional depth and honest narrative. Participants are required to bring their own laptops to engage in this final, critical phase of the storytelling process.
SAT & Sun 9:00 AM
Suzanne Stein : Beyond the Pretty: Social Realism in NYC
Social realism as well as classical street photography techniques are the focus in this two day intensive led by Suzanne Stein.
Saturday begins in the light and shadow filled, vibrant and celebrated destination neighborhood that is SoHo. Candid, movement oriented street work coupled with street portraiture if serendipitous opportunities arise during the session, approaching people and methods Suzanne uses to create unique portraits will be explored live on the street.

On Sunday, the workshop does an about face, shifting to the classic Hasidic neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Using environmental storytelling techniques and classic, candid street photography, the workshop will explore methods used to capture and preserve the character of a neighborhood while navigating the very real sensitivities involved with understanding boundaries and photographing people with care and respect while retaining the ability to effectively document people, place, and moment.
SAT & sun 9:00 AM
Steve Simon : The Personal Street: Turning Observation into Vision
Street photography is not about chasing moments. It is about recognizing what consistently draws you in and understanding why. In this workshop, Steve Simon presents a practical framework for developing a personal vision on the street. Through examples from his long-term projects and focused exercises, you’ll learn how to identify recurring subjects, emotional patterns, and visual tendencies in your work. We’ll examine how light, gesture, distance, and framing reveal your relationship to the scene—and how awareness turns scattered captures into intentional direction.

The workshop also addresses sequencing, visual consistency, and recurring motifs—how images gain strength when placed in dialogue with one another. A central focus is disciplined editing. Participants will see how removing 70 to 80 percent of their photographs often strengthens clarity and impact. Attendees will leave with practical tools to refine their vision, build cohesive bodies of work, and edit with confidence, purpose and discipline.
SAT & sun 9:00 AM
Meryl Meisler : Street Photography in Brooklyn's Bushwick Neighborhood
Spend a weekend immersed in the raw, electric streets of Bushwick, Brooklyn with legendary street photographer Meryl Meisler.
Drawing on decades of experience photographing Bushwick, by day as a public-school art teacher in the 1980s and ’90s, and again in the 21st century within its vibrant arts community and nightclubs, Meryl guides participants through the art of seeing, anticipating, and responding to the unpredictable theater of the street.

This intimate, hands-on workshop welcomes photographers of all levels and explores street photography as both observation and self-expression. Participants will walk and photograph together through Bushwick’s diverse neighborhoods, visit historic sites, explore public art and local culture, and learn to work confidently and ethically in public spaces. Supportive group discussions and critiques are included, along with an optional visit to a renowned Bushwick nightclub. Meryl’s teaching style is generous, direct, and deeply informed by her long career as both an artist and educator.
SAT & sun 9:00 AM
Harvey Stein : Endless Coney Island
Explore the endless photographic possibilities that the Coney Island boardwalk, amusement park, beach and neighborhood have to offer. Shoot people of all sizes, shapes, colors, languages and behaviors. Enjoy the rich smell of sand and surf. Be amazed at the amusements and photograph the vibrant activities and excitements of this stimulating area. Feast on a Nathan’s hotdog or two while surveying the scene. Topics explored during our two days at Coney include methods of approaching strangers, overcoming shyness, candid versus confrontational shooting techniques, ways of posing and interacting with people, controlling light and exposure in broad open spaces, and issues of self-expression and objectivity.

This workshop is for photographers who wish to begin or improve their street photography. It is an opportunity to work with a very dedicated teacher and photographer and come away with a greater understanding of not only how to advance your photography but also to be inspired to find new ways of personalizing your approach and bringing greater meaning to your images.
sun 3:00-6:00 pM
PAVEMENT Lab : The Edit & The Narrative (all workshop attendees)
The PAVEMENT Lab is a three-hour intensive culling and editing session designed to transform your weekend’s captures into a cohesive visual story. In this collaborative environment, the faculty moves from the street to the screen, guiding you through the critical process of selecting images that possess true honesty and emotional depth.

The Lab focuses on developing a keen eye for the human condition—learning to move past hesitation to find a straightforward, unpretentious narrative within your work. You will refine your ability to remain flexible and adaptable while gaining a concrete understanding of how to document rapidly changing societal conditions. Participants should bring their laptop and be prepared to dive into their raw files to find the definitive voice within the frame.
