Join us for another session of PetMedic Pathways, a free monthly STEM series designed for high school students interested in animal health, science, and careers in veterinary medicine.

Whether you dream of becoming a veterinarian, veterinary technician, emergency and critical care specialist, or simply enjoy science and medicine, this interactive program will introduce you to one of the most life-saving aspects of veterinary care - fluid therapy and blood transfusions.

January's Topic:
Fluid Therapy & Transfusions

Discover how veterinary professionals use intravenous (IV) fluids and blood products to stabilize critically ill patients, treat dehydration, support organ function, and save lives during medical emergencies. Learn why understanding circulation, hydration, and blood chemistry is essential in veterinary medicine.

We'll explore how IV catheters are placed, discuss the different types of fluids used in veterinary medicine, learn when blood transfusions are needed, review blood typing and compatibility, and work through real patient cases to understand how fluid therapy and transfusions help patients recover. Students will also participate in interactive demonstrations and simulation activities using veterinary equipment.

By the end of the session, students should be able to:

• Explain the purpose of fluid therapy and blood transfusions in veterinary medicine.
• Describe how IV fluids help treat dehydration, shock, and other medical conditions.
• Understand the basics of blood typing and why compatibility is important before a transfusion.
• Recognize situations in which fluid therapy or blood products may be lifesaving.
• Work together like a veterinary team to develop a treatment plan for a critically ill patient.
  
  

Students are welcome to attend one session or the entire series throughout the school year. Each workshop stands on its own, so you won't fall behind if you miss one. Earn a Certificate of Completion for each session or a special certificate for the series if you attend all nine sessions.

This program is for high school students (grades 9–12) with an interest in STEM, biology, veterinary science, healthcare, emergency medicine, or critical care.
