Planning Class Sessions: Leveraging the 5Es Model to Support Student Learning
How we design our class sessions can have a great impact on our students' learning. Research shows us that when students are more actively engaged with the material, they make stronger connections and more productive meanings for key ideas. 5Es is a research-backed instructional model that supports students in actively constructing STEM knowledge. In this session, we'll engage and explore approaches to class design before explaining and elaborating how instructors can use the 5Es model in their own courses.


Neil is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Statistics. He joined Penn State in 2019 after obtaining a PhD in Mathematics (and Statistics) Education from Arizona State University. His core research areas include exploring how students learning and think about key ideas in Statistics/Data Science, curriculum development across STEM disciplines, and professional development for graduate students, post docs, and faculty around teaching.
