Rivkah Low’s Story
Rivkah Low was born in the town of Skalat in 1928 in what was then Poland. (Skalat is now in the Ukraine.) She had two sisters, Perel and Frieda, and a brother, Michel. Her mother’s name was Zlata Schonhaut Low and her father's name was Yechiel Hershel Low. She grew up in a time when there was so much prejudice against Jewish people that they were not able to live freely or celebrate milestones they way we are able to today. Nazi Germany entered the town in 1941 and when she was around 13 years old she was removed from her home, with her family, to the Skalat Ghetto. There were 8,600 Jews in Skalat at the beginning of the Nazi occupation. Based on the available eye-witness testimony 8,307 of those Jews died either in pogroms, "actions" or mini attacks, or when deported to concentration camps. Only 193 Jews survived the war. Based on information provided by Rivkah's cousin, Herbert Schonhaut, Rivkah and her family were killed together in 1943 when a group of Jews in the Skalat ghetto were shot.
Rivkah was 15 years old.
Below (Left to Right) are pictures of Rivkah, the testimony of her cousin, and a picture of her family: Rivkah, Zlata, Perel, Frieda, Yechiel and young Michel.
