Sources Talk Back – February 22, 5pm, The Columbia Journalism School, lecture hall (3rd floor)

The last few years have seen a sudden flurry of publications about the Sullivan Institute/Fourth Wall community. Alice Graves and Artie Honan both published memoirs of their experience in the group – the first substantial publications since Amy Siskind’s “The Sullivan Institute/Fourth Wall Community,” written as a PhD dissertation when the group was still active and published as a book in 2003. Kaethe Cherney wrote a novel based on her family’s experience. Keith Newton and Luke Meyer showed the first episode of their documentary series “The Fourth Wall” at the Tribeca Film Festival last spring. And I published my book: “The Sullivanians: Sex, Psychotherapy and the Wild Life of an American Commune” in June.

It seemed valuable to organize an event for authors of books (and film) about the group to discuss their different approaches to representing this unusual communal experience. I also want to extend the invitation to others who have been written about (or filmed) or former group members who have feelings about the way the existing works have represented the group’s life. The experience of the group was complex and varied from person to person and so I thought it would be valuable to hear from a range of people in a spirit of candor and civility.

The event will also be open to the general public.

The event will consist of two panels. The first will include various people who have written or represented the group's experience including Amy Siskind, Luke Meyer, Alice Graves, Kaethe Cherney, Jesse Lambert (who is working on a graphic novel) and myself.
The second panel will be made up of people who were interviewed for my book and/or “The Fourth Wall” documentary to talk about the experience of having their stories told by others. There will be time after each panel for comments and/or questions from the public.
