Southern Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club
50th Anniversary
In celebration of 50 years of Southern Gaels, the club are running an action packed festival from the 17th to the 24th of June 2023. The week will include hurling and camogie matches for our adult and juvenille teams, a family fun day, a golf outing, ceol agus craic and a recital by the Army Band. The festival will culminate with a Gala Dinner Dance in the Sheraton Hotel on Saturday 24th June.
Brief Club History
Southern Gaels (Gaeil an Deiscirt) were founded fifty years ago in 1973 as a result of an amalgamation between Athlone and Walderstown Hurling Clubs. Frank Young of Athlone and Mick Ward of Walderstown were among the key people that helped to create our club. The colours selected, for the new club were the maroon and yellow of Walderstown. The first committee was; Patsy Norton, President; Frank Young, Chairperson; Mick Ward, Vice-Chairperson; Bill Stacey, Secretary; Brendan McCormack, Assistant Secretary; Joe Ryan, Treasurer; Ken O’Neill, Assistant Treasurer; Bill Stacey and Brendan McCormack PROs. The club registered both Junior and Under 14 sides.
