Testimonials
I wasn't sure what to expect having never used a TENS unit and never having given birth :) I simply wanted to have everything in my "toolbox." Alycia was so easy to work with and it felt like a well prepared kit with extra batteries and easy to use set up instructions. When it came time for me to use it, I found the TENS sensation to be a good distraction from the pain and gave me something else to focus on; especially when clicking the "boost" button during contractions. It certainly doesn't remove labor pain, but is a great additive tool for coping. I would definitely recommend it! For the distraction it provides and how easy it was to obtain, I found the price to be completely reasonable and attainable!

"I used this TENS unit during my labor, and it really helped take the discomfort down to a manageable level! I would definitely recommend it! I especially liked that it was easy to control, so I could adjust it myself. "

The Evidence on TENS unit use in labor
Studies show that the use of TENS:

is a non-drug, or non-pharmacological way to help manage pain,
delayed or postponed the use of medications for pain relief,
lowered pain compared to placebo or routine care,
has no known side effects to birther or baby.
FAQ
How do I pick up and return my unit?
In-person pick up/drop off is offered locally (Marietta, GA). If shipping is selected, a $20 shipping fee will be added, which includes Priority shipping to you, a pre-paid Priority return label, and a box for shipment use.
Shipping is only available for continental United-States at this time.
Can the TENS unit be used in all labor settings?
The Elle TENS is useful for all labor choices in all labor settings. It can be used at home for early labor, during travel to your place of birth, and can be continued at your place of birth in any position needed for your comfort. It is always recommended to discuss for TENS use your plans with your provider and birthplace.
When is it not recommended to use a TENS in labor?
A TENS unit should not be used in patients who use a cardiac pacemaker, have metallic implants, or suffer from epilepsy. It is also not recommended to use a TENS on any open wounds. Although there have been no adverse effects shown, it is not recommended for use before 37 weeks of pregnancy.
Will it hurt? What does it feel like?
When you’re using the TENS during labor, you might feel a buzzing, tingling, or prickling sensation. Most people describe it to feel like "water jets" in a hot tub. It should not be painful, and the unit's power is customizable to your body and your preferences.

It is therefore recommended to start the TENS early in your labor. In more advanced labor, some have described the TENS to have an additive effect to the sensations. This is another benefit to having one at your disposal at home for early labor.
When should I start my rental?
It is recommended to start your rental at your 37th week, but early reservation is recommended to secure a unit for your desired date.
How does a TENS unit work in labor?
Researchers believe that the TENS works through the Gate Control Theory, where your brain can only process so many sensation input signals at once. By creating a buzzing, sensory signal, it "drowns out" the signals from the contractions. At higher intensities, it can stimulate the release of your own endogenous pain-relieving endorphins as well. As something you can control, it also provides an anti-anxiety effect to the labor process.
Can a TENS be used with a fetal monitoring? An epidural? a C-section? a waterbirth?
The Elle TENS can be worn with external fetal monitors in place, and can be particularly useful in situations where mobility is limited or the baby is in a posterior or asynclic position. It can interfere with some wireless monitors and internal fetal monitors.

While it can not be worn once a epidural or spinal anesthesia is in place, it can be wonderful for helping you to relax and manage pain in the earlier stages of labor, before being admitted to the hospital, and in the hospital while you are waiting for the anesthesiologist.

TENS can not be used in water, but can be worn before/after showering or entering a birth pool.

Are there any requirements for rental?
A $20 deposit will be required to reserve the unit. The balance will be due the first day of the rental or when it is mailed/picked up, whichever is sooner.
What if a unit is no longer available at the agreed rental start date?
Let's chat! The rental dates can be adjusted or the rental cost will be pro-rated. No deposit refund will be given once a unit is secured and ready to rent.
What is the security deposit for?
The $75 security deposit is to cover for loss or damage to the unit. These units are imported from the UK and thus take time (and money) to replace. As long as the unit is returned whole and in working condition, the security deposit is FULLY refundable within 7 business days of receipt.
What's the difference between this unit and the ones I can get at my local pharmacy?
The features on this unit are specifically designed for labor. There is a "boost" button that intensifies the sensation during contractions. The modes, depth, and power are customizable to finetune a distracting, helpful sensation instead of a standard muscle-stimulating frequency standard units. This level of stimulation is non-customizable and can sometimes be too intense for many users. This unit is imported from the United Kingdom and is used in a majority of labors there.
How are units cleaned between users?
The units are sanitized with medical-grade cleaners and verified for wear and tear between users. The standard lanyard has been replaced with a silicone material that can also be sanitized.
