The Mind of a Terrorist: A Clinical Formulation

As the world is more often faced with terrorist occurrences, the need to understand the dynamics of radicalization and its impact on the consulting room and community has become urgent.

This conference draws on the expertise of three international clinician-researchers with extensive experience dealing with terrorist attacks. The panelists will describe the factors that attract individuals, often without previous mental health diagnoses, to radicalization, the process of radicalization, and the transformational outcome.

Located within specific social, political, and historical contexts, the presentations will explore a cluster of dynamics observed in individuals who perpetrate mass violence including damaged narcissism, splitting, and the fate of the super-ego / ego ideal.

Discussion among the panelists and the audience will provide participants the opportunity to reflect on clinical and cross-cultural dynamics that characterize terrorism and its impact on life in the consulting room.
