Up Close and Personal with Sue Donnelly
We are all aware of the ‘selfie’. Most of us use frequently to enhance and promote our image on social media. But what did we do before we had access to digital technology?
In this session, we are going back to the past. We will be exploring how female artists managed to promote their skills and talents in a world that was totally male-dominated. What messages did their portraits contain? How did their talent enable them to stay one step ahead of the competition?
As we move towards the present day, we will investigate how portraits became a reflection of real life, with its pains and angst-driven emotions. You’ll even find “truth” maybe not quite what it seems.
If you believe that social media is something new, think again! The past is an intriguing place to visit, and explains just how we arrived at where we are now thanks to the pioneering spirit of a small number of artists.
