Liam Wilson is so close to a world title shot he can almost smell it.

But there’s just one formidable hurdle he must clear before he can even consider clinching the belts, and that comes in the form of Argentina star Matias Rueda.

Wilson (10-1, 7KO), the No. 6 super featherweight ranked WBO, will face Rueda (37-1, 32KO) for the WBO International Super Featherweight title in a bout Wednesday night at the Brisbane Convention Center, den Both You can win so much, but lose even more.

The Argentine, who sits at No. 8 in the WBO rankings, is arguably Wilson’s toughest challenge yet and unlike any the Queenslander has ever faced before.

First of all, Rueda’s record speaks for itself.

In 38 pro fights, the 34-year-old has lost just once, to Oscar Valdez for the WBO, WBC and The Ring Magazine super featherweight titles.

It’s also been six years since that loss, and since then Rueda has continued to beat his opponents, knocking them out left, right and centre.

It’s Rueda’s ability to end the fight – and fast – that makes No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose aware of the “dangerous” evening that awaits Wilson.

“He can end a fight in one punch,” Rose said foxsports.com.au.

“He has that knockout power. You look at his record and it confirms the power he has.

“His only loss came in a world title match against Oscar Valdez, who is one of the best in the division.

“Rueda, 37 wins and 32 knockouts, he can end the fight pretty quickly. If Liam isn’t 100 percent at his game, it’s a very dangerous fight for Liam.

“When you reach that standard, it’s a very dangerous time. It really shows you where you stand as a fighter.”

Main event’s Ben Damon also acknowledged Rueda’s overwhelming ability to create a disruption and pointed out how difficult it is to emerge as a top contender in the weight class in Argentina, a nation of top-flight boxers.

“Matias Rueda has KOed 32 opponents in his 37 wins – an 85 percent KO rate is an intimidating thing and it’s clear his strength is his power,” said Damon.

“With the WBO being one of the more respected organisations, it’s not for nothing that you’re eighth in the world.

“He’s also the number one super featherweight division in Argentina and they’ve got over sixty active fighters in the division, so he’s not a guy who’s going overseas for a spanking – he’s going to think he’s going to win this fight and still up in the rankings.” jumps further up and eventually gets a second shot at a world title.”

In fact, it’s not Rueda’s first time struggling outside of the Americas just to stroll the South Bank and enjoy the Brisbane countryside.

He arrived with bad intentions and when asked why he fought a fight deep in enemy territory, Rueda’s answer was simple: “Because I know I will win it.”

Getting to where he is now has not been an easy one for Rueda.

Born and raised in Tandil, a town of approximately 140,000 people and the same place that Argentine tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro calls home, Rueda’s first language was speaking with his feet rather than his hands.

“In the beginning I was a soccer player,” said Rueda.

“When I stopped playing it, I went to a boxing studio and little by little I realized that I had good skills for this sport and that’s how it all started.

“As an amateur, I only lost one fight out of around 40 and was national champion.”

Against Wilson, Rueda faces off against a fighter who has only had 11 pro fights under his belt.

But don’t think for a second that the 34-year-old has left no stone unturned in his preparation.

“I had enough lead time to plan a good training camp,” said Rueda.

“I’ve been training very hard as it’s a very important fight for my career.

“He (Wilson) is a good boxer, good perspective, he has good leg movement.

“There weren’t many videos of his fights on the internet, but we analyzed him as best we could.”

Time will tell if Rueda’s game plan, which is based on watching as much of Wilson as possible, will play out as he anticipates, but with the duo’s combined record of highlight reel knockouts on Wednesday night, there will undoubtedly be sparks to fly.
