The Cause
The Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Hospital is proud to care for more than 1,500 patients with cancer annually. Improving access to cancer care and reducing health-care disparities are top priorities. With the support of philanthropy, we have developed a multi-faceted approach to address health disparities in our community. Collaborating with clinical and social work teams, we are able to eliminate barriers to accessing care through generous philanthropic support.
Key programs to aid access to cancer treatment include:
Patient Support Funds: Launched by the generosity of Patty Liberatore’s friends and family 10 years ago, “Patty’s Fund” provides resources to financially-challenged cancer patients so no one would delay or forego a diagnosis or treatment. Over the past decade, Patty's Fund has offered vital assistance to cancer patients around costs of medication, housing, transportation, and other necessary expenses. The Fund has proven more important than ever as Sibley extends access to care to more patients within Washington, D.C.'s Wards 7 & 8. We are proud to also provide specific resources to our pediatric patients to support their unique journey.
Supporting Patients Closer to Home: In collaboration with Unity Health Care, Sibley established the Johns Hopkins Cancer Care Clinic at Unity Health Care within the Parkside Health Center located in Ward 7. Donor support allowed us to create this clinic, which houses a full-time Nurse Practitioner who practices a place-based model of care and is available to travel to Unity’s five additional health centers located throughout Wards 7 and 8.
