About OhioPro
Ohio Peer Recovery Organizations (OhioPRO) is a statewide leader dedicated to advancing recovery supports, uplifting peer-run organizations, and empowering certified peer recovery supporters who provide these essential services. We are committed to elevating the voices of individuals with lived experience of mental illness, substance use disorder, and co-occurring conditions, and to strengthening the recovery support system across Ohio.

Ohio Peer Recovery Organizations (OhioPRO) is honored to again host the Ohio Peer Recovery Summit. The Summit is an annual convening of peer recovery supporters, peer run organization leaders, recovery advocates and champions, and community stakeholders from Ohio and across the country. With an expected attendance of nearly 600 individuals, the Summit provides a dedicated space for networking, growth, and learning – all of which contribute to the advancement of peer support in Ohio. National and local speakers will lead transformative educational sessions that provide recovery leaders and peer supporters with new ideas and invigoration to continue to support the recovery journeys of our fellow Ohioans.

The theme of the 2026 Peer Recovery Summit is CONNECTION CREATES RECOVERY: Recovery is not a solitary experience. In sharing their lived experience, peer recovery supporters give others the strength and encouragement needed to walk the path of recovery. Healing happens through the sharing of life’s moments with connections that show us we are not alone on this journey.

She educates and persuades federal and state policymakers to act on a wide range of issues that impact individuals with mental health conditions including health care, education, criminal justice, and housing, and she facilitates relationship between state and local MHA affiliates and public officials. She is a national coalition leader serving as co-chair of multiple working groups and is passionate about lifting up the perspective of people who have mental health conditions to overcome misinformation and ignorance around these conditions and the impact of trauma.

He recently founded Rising Recovery to expand recovery support services after completing a 30 year career at the US Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) where he served in multiple roles including the Director of the Center for Mental Health Services and the founding Director of the Office of Recovery. Paolo also holds leadership roles with The College for Behavioral Health Leadership, the Center for Addiction Recovery Supports, the Coalition for Rights and Recovery and other efforts.

Kristen has led a variety of nonprofit recovery programs over the course of her career, as well as secured major funding, and trained thousands in strengths-based, person-centered approaches. As Vice President of Curriculum and Development at the LYNC Institute, she develops innovative training and workforce development programs that empower peers and systems alike, helping communities build environments where people can truly thrive.
Cherene Caraco

Cherene is a psychiatric, trauma and suicide attempt survivor who has made the last 32 years her personal and professional mission to understand how services and systems can either foster wellness, healing and a high quality of life or can harm the process of recovery.
She was first introduced to mental health services at the age of 13 when she was given the first of 8 mental health diagnoses along with a label of “severe and persistent mental illness.” Cherene had to recover from the impact of pathology-based mental health services along with the trauma that led her to becoming a service recipient.
In 2005/2006, Cherene started Promise Resource Network (PRN), a peer-operated and staffed non-profit organization serving people that are uninsured who experience complex combinations of mental health, substance use challenges, houselessness and incarceration.
Then in 2019 started Peer Voice NC, a statewide movement of people directly impacted by mental health issues to organize and mobilize around legislative and practice change.
Cherene is honored to have been named the 2021 Innovator of the Year by the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law.
