Changing the Pattern: Practical Strategies for Challenging Behavior
PRESENTED BY: CAROLYN KUEHNEL, PH.D., NCSP

Once parents understand that challenging behavior is a form of communication, the next logical question is: what do we actually do about it? This presentation is designed to transition families from the phase of understanding behavior to taking constructive, compassionate action in the home. It is incredibly common for parents to find themselves stuck in repetitive, exhausting cycles of power struggles, negotiations, and emotional outbursts that seem to have no resolution. By attending this session, you will learn how to break these unproductive cycles and establish new, healthier behavioral patterns. Our focus will be on providing you with evidence-informed, highly practical tools that reduce daily friction, increase cooperation, and restore a sense of peace and predictability to your household.

A central focus of this workshop will be distinguishing between preventative strategies and active intervention strategies. Parents often feel overwhelmed because they are trying to teach new behaviors in the middle of a meltdown, which is when a child’s brain is least receptive to learning. We will discuss how to structure your child's environment and routines beforehand to prevent challenging behaviors from occurring in the first place. When behaviors do occur, you will be equipped with a clear roadmap of how to intervene safely and effectively. By understanding when to prevent and how to intervene, you can respond to your child with consistency and confidence, rather than reacting out of frustration or exhaustion.

During this session, we will demystify several common behavioral interventions and explain exactly how to implement them correctly at home. We will explore the power of positive reinforcement, which goes far beyond simple bribery to actively build and encourage desirable habits. You will also learn the clinical principles behind planned ignoring and how to use it without making your child feel abandoned, as well as the proper, calm implementation of time-outs when safety or regulation is compromised. Additionally, we will cover behavioral contracting for older children and Functional Communication Training, which teaches children to ask for what they need using words or signs instead of resorting to challenging behaviors. You will leave this workshop with an extensive library of concrete strategies, allowing you to choose the exact tools that fit your unique family dynamics.
