What is The Chicken Coop?
The Chicken Coop is a 10-week, skill-based comedy program for Grades 5 through 8, hosted in the heart of Swift Current at the historic Lyric Theatre.

This isn't just about telling jokes—it's about learning the core skills of collaboration, public speaking, and spontaneous thinking through the lens of comedy. Kids will learn how to write sketches, create video concepts, and gain the stage presence needed to deliver a hilarious stand-up routine.

The Two Flocks
We have two dedicated age groups to ensure every student receives targeted instruction and maximum stage time:

• Barnyard Banter: Grades 5 & 6 (Sundays, 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM)
• Crop Circles: Grades 7 & 8 (Sundays, 2:45 PM – 4:15 PM)
• We will increase time to two hours for last two weeks for organization and rehearsal for capstone performance.  

Curriculum: What They'll Learn
Over 16 hours of instruction, students will rotate through four core comedy modules, designed to be fast-paced and fun.

1.Improv

• Learning to say "Yes, And" to build ideas together.
• Creating dynamic characters and scenes instantly.

2.Sketch Comedy

• Collaboratively writing short scripts.
• Understanding the structure of a joke and comedic timing.

3.Stand Up

• Developing their unique stage persona and voice.
• Writing, refining, and delivering their own stand-up material.

4.Comedic Videos

• Creating visual gags and funny short-form video concepts.
• Learning basic filming and editing skills using their own devices (optional).

Work-Study / Volunteer Commitment
We believe financial constraints should never prevent participation. We have a limited number of spots available that are heavily discounted or free in exchange for a parental volunteer commitment (e.g., social media assistance, show-night support and class setup).
