From Reaction to Response: Supporting Our Kids While Managing Our Own Triggers
PRESENTED BY: MIKKAH WEISMAN, LICSW

Identifying our personal parenting triggers is an essential first step, but learning how to respond differently in the heat of an emotional moment is an entirely different challenge. It is incredibly difficult to remain calm when your child is melting down, your own nervous system is highly activated, and the entire household is rapidly escalating. This workshop is designed specifically to bridge the gap between intellectual understanding and real-time behavioral change for parents. We will explore the intense, fast-moving dynamics of co-escalation, where a parent's stress and a child's distress feed into one another, and provide you with the practical tools needed to interrupt this cycle. By attending this session, you will learn how to transition from automatic, defensive reactions to thoughtful, intentional responses, even during the most chaotic moments of family life.

During this presentation, we will focus heavily on the physiological concept of co-regulation, which is the process by which a parent uses their own calm state to help soothe a dysregulated child. We will examine what happens to the brain and body when we are triggered, and why our capacity for logical thinking completely shuts down during moments of high emotional arousal. Mikkah Weisman will guide parents through concrete, physical strategies to pause and reset the nervous system in real time, such as controlled breathing, sensory grounding, and internal self-talk. By learning how to manage your own physiological alarm system first, you prevent yourself from adding fuel to your child's emotional fire, creating a safe space where de-escalation can actually begin.

Ultimately, this workshop provides families with a step-by-step roadmap for navigating moments of intense conflict while preserving the parent-child connection. We will discuss how to set firm, necessary boundaries without resorting to yelling, threats, or emotional withdrawal. Parents will learn how to communicate safety to an overwhelmed child through their posture, tone of voice, and physical presence, rather than relying on excessive verbal reasoning when a child is too dysregulated to listen. You will leave this session with a highly practical set of strategies for managing your own emotional reactions, allowing you to guide your child through their hardest moments with confidence, consistency, and compassion.
