PRESENTED BY: CAROLYN KUEHNEL, PH.D., NCSP
It is an incredibly frustrating and exhausting experience for parents when they feel they have done everything right, yet see no improvement in their child's behavior or anxiety. You may have read the parenting books, attended the workshops, consistently implemented new strategies, and modified your own reactions, only to find your family still trapped in the same difficult cycles. This presentation is specifically designed for caregivers who feel completely stuck and are losing hope that change is possible. Our goal is to help you troubleshoot these persistent challenges by looking beneath the surface of why typical interventions fail. By attending this session, you will learn how to identify the hidden obstacles that stall progress and gain a clear, compassionate framework to help your family break through these barriers and move forward.
During this workshop, we will systematically examine the three primary categories of obstacles that commonly get in the way of successful behavioral and emotional intervention: emotion-driven barriers, communication barriers, and parent or family barriers. First, we will explore emotion-driven barriers, such as a child's intense physiological dysregulation or deep-seated fears that override their cognitive ability to use coping skills. Next, we will address communication barriers, analyzing how subtle, unconscious patterns of interaction between family members can inadvertently signal danger or reinforce negative behaviors. Finally, we will look honestly at parent and family barriers, including parental burnout, inconsistent implementation of strategies across different caregivers, and the emotional toll of managing chronic household stress. Understanding these intersecting factors allows parents to stop blaming themselves or their children and start addressing the actual root causes of the stagnation.
This presentation moves beyond basic advice to offer a sophisticated, clinical troubleshooting guide for complex family dynamics. Dr. Carolyn Kuehnel will help you analyze your current routines to discover exactly what is keeping an unproductive pattern alive in your home. You will learn how to adjust your expectations based on your child's current emotional capacity, streamline your communication to reduce defensiveness, and restore your own emotional reserves so you can remain consistent. We will discuss how to pivot your approach safely and effectively when a previously successful strategy stops working. You will leave this session with a practical framework for identifying system blocks, a renewed sense of hope, and concrete, actionable steps to get your family unstuck and moving toward positive growth.
