PRESENTED BY: MIKKAH WEISMAN, LICSW
There are moments in parenting when a child's behavior hits a specific nerve, causing an emotional reaction in us that feels far bigger than the situation warrants. When a child screams, refuses to cooperate, or shuts down, parents may find themselves experiencing intense anger, deep sadness, or an overwhelming urge to escape. This presentation is designed to help caregivers understand that these intense reactions are often not about the present moment at all, but are instead rooted in our own past experiences, stress levels, and unresolved trauma responses. By attending this session, you will learn how to explore these sensitive moments with curiosity rather than self-judgment. Our goal is to help you recognize when your own nervous system has been triggered, allowing you to move away from reactive parenting and toward conscious, calm, and intentional caregiving.
During this workshop, we will examine the physiological and psychological mechanisms of triggers and trauma responses within the context of parenting. We will discuss how our personal histories, including how we were parented, past relational injuries, and chronic stress, shape our current tolerance for our children's difficult emotions. When a child exhibits challenging behavior, it can unconsciously activate our own fight, flight, freeze, or fawn survival responses, making it nearly impossible to respond with the patience we desire. Mikkah Weisman will guide parents through the process of identifying their specific personal triggers, whether they are related to feeling disrespected, rejected, helpless, or overwhelmed by sensory input. Understanding these internal processes allows parents to separate their child's developmental struggles from their own historical wounds, preventing parenting from feeling so deeply personal and painful.
Ultimately, this session focuses on fostering self-compassion and providing practical tools for emotional regulation. Parents will learn how to recognize the early physical warning signs of a triggered state, such as a racing heart, shallow breathing, or muscle tension, and how to implement rapid grounding techniques in the heat of the moment. You will leave this workshop with a greater awareness of your own emotional landscape and a compassionate framework for understanding your reactions.
