Why Motown Meets Blue Note?

What do Blue Note Records and Motown Records have in common?
In a word—Style.

Though they emerged from different genres—Blue Note from jazz, and Motown from soul and R&B—both labels were bold artistic forces that defined their sound, nurtured talent, and shaped American culture.

At this year’s SJO / Tula’s Jazz Reunion, we honor that shared spirit by blending the improvisational brilliance of Blue Note with the irresistible soul of Motown in one vibrant musical celebration.

About the Event:
This is our 4th Annual Jazz Reunion, presented by Seattle Jazz Offering, and it pays tribute to the beautiful 15-year legacy (1999–2014) of Tula’s Jazz Club, where legends like Hadley Caliman shared the stage with many of Seattle’s finest jazz musicians.

🎶 This year’s theme — “Motown Meets Blue Note: A Jazz Affair in Motown Style” — brings together:
  • Straight-ahead jazz in the Blue Note tradition
  • Funky, danceable grooves reminiscent of Motown
  • A spirit of unity, creativity, and soul
The Lineup – Reunion of The Jazz Suspenders of the 90s

  • Reggie Goings – Vocals
  • Dan Greenblatt – Tenor Saxophone
  • Phil Sparks – Bass
  • Jamael Nance – Drums
  • Bill Anschell – Piano

Shared Legacy:
Blue Note & Motown
Both iconic labels have left a lasting imprint through:
✔️ Signature Sounds – Blue Note’s bold, complex hard bop and Motown’s polished, melodic soul
✔️ Artist Development – nurturing musicianship, performance, and collaboration
✔️ Cultural Impact – soundtracks to the Civil Rights Movement and pillars of Black excellence
✔️ Timeless Production – from Rudy Van Gelder’s studio genius at Blue Note to The Funk Brothers’ magic at Motown
✔️ Visual Identity – striking album covers, stylish branding, and a sense of purpose behind the art
